Aguilera sues former producersMay 22, 2001

Pop star Christine Aguilera is suing her former producers in an attempt to block the commercial release of demo recordings she made before becoming famous.
Aguilera has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles against two music companies, as well as the producers, in which she says the recordings are being packaged for release.

The action is in response to a suit filed against her earlier this month in New York by Platinum Recording Group and JFB Music.

The companies say they own the rights to the recordings and should be allowed to release them without interference from the singer.

Without consent

A 13-song album, Just Be Free, is due to be released on 5 June, and distributors have started accepting tens of thousands of orders at £6.90 each, according to Aguilera's lawsuit.

The 20-year-old singer also says the producers have appropriated her name, likeness and photograph for advertising without her consent.

The recordings were made to sell the singer to record companies before she was signed, her lawsuit says.

The two music companies are seeking compensatory and punitive damages, as well as payment for legal costs.

Christina Aguilera burst onto the pop scene in 1999 as an 18-year-old with her US number one single Genie in a Bottle.

Comparisons with Britney Spears followed, not least because the two worked together as children on the Mickey Mouse Club TV programme.

In February 2000 she was awarded the Grammy for best new artist, cementing her rise up the pop ladder.
