WHILE playing her only Scottish gig in Glasgow at the end of October, international singing sensation Christina Aguilera found time to throw her backing behind the Scottish Executive's domestic abuse campaign.
Christina literally lent a hand to the hard hitting campaign by providing a handprint and some signed artwork for an exhibition that will be launched in Scotland this summer.
The singer grew up with a violent father and has frequently spoken out about the terrible impact that living with domestic abuse has had on her life. The lyrics in her song I'm OK tell of ''living in a war called home'' and Christina wrote a personal tribute on a specially-designed copy of these lyrics to be used as an exhibit in the show.
Scotland's government took the opportunity to approach Christina while she was in Scotland as part of her world tour. It is currently devising a new art exhibition in conjunction with Scottish Women's Aid to highlight the devastating effects that domestic abuse has on women and young people in Scotland.
Christina will feature in it, as will Fran Healy of Scottish band Travis, who has also given his support.
Christina said: ''Any campaign that raises the public's awareness of the issue of domestic abuse is worthwhile and I am pleased to support the Scottish Executive's campaign.
''My own experience has shown that you can survive after going through terrible times at home and I give my utmost support to those women and young people living with the threat of domestic abuse.
''I understand that there is a strong support network in Scotland and the government here raises awareness of how and where to get help.
''Don't suffer in silence because help is out there.''
Mary Mulligan, Scotland's Deputy Minister for Communities said: ''I'm delighted that Christina has given her support. We want to keep the momentum going.
It's important to get themes sage across to women and children that they are in no way to blame.
''In Scotland, one-in-five women suffers domestic abuse during her lifetime. This is shocking and we are working to ensure that abused women and their children get the help and support that they need.''
Christina also made time to meet two young Scottish girls who supported the campaign, one of whom had direct experience of living with domestic abuse. Lorraine and Maggi, both 15, were delighted to meet their idol.
Maggi said: ''I was thrilled to meet with Christina, I just love her songs and the concert was great.
''It also means something to me as I know we've gone through the same experiences and the fact that she has survived and has become a huge star, has given me hope things will get better.''
This high-profile support came just as Scottish Women's Aid launched its Listen Louder II campaign, to encourage thousands of pupils at secondary schools across Scotland to speak out about domestic abuse and to offer support to friends who may be suffering as a result of incidents at home.
Claire Houghton, National Children's Worker at Scottish Women's Aid, explained why getting young people talking can really help: ''Young people have told us that being able to talk to someone and knowing that they are not alone, has made a huge difference to how they cope. Young people standing together against domestic abuse sends out a strong message to young survivors that their friends can support them.
''This campaign gives us all hope for a future where domestic abuse is eradicated.''
