An Interview with Christina Aguilera1997
by Alma Boghitoiu Dinca

Ever get tired of hearing the same old stories of excess regarding your favourite musicians and entertainers? Too much drinking, drugging, partying . . . too much money! Yes, these things happen in the world of the musically inclined, along with the rest of us regular types. On the flip side, musicians and entertainers are some of the most generous and sensitive people you will ever meet. And they have fabulous story to tell about themselves. Let's take the new-comer, Christina Aguilera, for example. Her name is not very popular although she began performing since she was a child.

That was a pretty honest interview! She went into detail on a lot of the questions.

Q. What are you currently up to?
A. Of course, I still have to learn. This is just the beginning for me. When I decided to take this route and get involved in the showbizz, I paid attention to other famous artists and studied their musical techniques. The important thing in music is to create your own style. That's why I wanted to learn how to be the best. I am a fortune person. Life is fantastic. I always wanted to become a singer and that wish came true. Even if I try to get some publicity, I don´t feel like a superstar. I try to live a normal life as possible.

Q. Singing is difficult or easy for you?
A. I trust my voice. So, it's not difficult at all.

Q. Since you were a little child you wanted to be a famous artists. Am I wrong or not?
A. No. You are right. I was born in Staten Island, New Jersey and raised in Wexford, Pennsylvania. Being the daughter of a father in the military and a musician mother who toured Europe with the Youth Symphony Orchestra, at the age of 18 I had to travel around the world. I spent some time living in Japan, then I moved to Florida… to Texas… before settling in Wexford, a suburb of Pittsburgh. I wanted to perform as long as I could remember.

Q. Life was easy for you!
A. Not exactly. I did get lucky, but I also faced a lot of difficult times. Many times I felt like an outsider. For becoming a real star I have to work hard and make a name for myself. It's hard to describe my feelings of sadness and self-pity when I enjoyed the first meal miles away from home.

Q. People say you drive a Spacy motorbike?
A. (She answered this question smiling at me) All artists promote their image in a way or another. Only people close to me know who I am for real.

Q. What about your private life?
A. It will remain private. The persons who bring joy into my life are my parents and my sister.

Q. Should I understand you have big plans for your career?
A. I intend to release my debut album with RCA, but not right away. It will be possible only when I find the best songs for me.

Q. Best songs?
A. I like dramatic songs with climax. If the sound is low it's not an advantage for my voice.

Q. What will you perform at the Golden Stag Festival?
A. Those who followed my short career know I recently recorded a duet, "All I Wanna Do," with the Japanese pop star Keizo Nakanishi. So, probably they expect me to sing this tonight. What I really want is to make the crowd crazy while I'll be performing my two-song set which will include a Sheryl Crow and Diana Ross song.

[Revised in 2000:]

Christina Aguilera did record her debut album with RCA. The subsequent release of the single Genie in a Bottle caused an explosion of interest in the singer, with the single selling 500,000 copies and hitting No. in the charts.

As far as her dating life, like Britney Spears, little hard evidence is known. She had admitted to having a crush on MTV's Carson Daly, and New York Post claimed she also had an affair with Enrique Iglesias. The journal wrote ''the two were dancing nasty together late at night in a New York bar''.

The most recent dating fact has been she's been dating one of her dancers, Jorge Santos, whom she's also been living with. A close friend said to the press "Jorge is a good, down to earth guy and Christina feels like she can be herself with him instead of trying to live up to something she's not.''

Christina Aguilera's success is up to her. I really think it's all about making wise choices and not being afraid.
