During the Olympic Games, some of the most exciting and memorable moments come from the opening and closing ceremonies. Whether it be the anticipation of the lighting of the torch or the mixed feelings that come with it closing, the ceremonies are definitely a special part of the Games. The musical performances during the ceremony can also be very powerful and moving. Here are some of the Olympic music highlights over the past years.
Seoul, 1988 Whitney Houstons One Moment In Time. This inspirational song was featured on the Olympic album and was NBC-TV's theme for the 1988 Summer Olympic Games. The song was a major success in the UK and peaked at number five on the US charts, selling 1,500,000 copies worldwide.
Barcelona, 1992 Amigos Para Siempre by Jose Carreras and Sarah Brightman closed the ceremony and became an international hit. Barcelona, the pop opera song captured the spirit and look of the Barcelona games with its beautiful music and Freddy Mercury's voice.
Atlanta, 1996 Reach by Gloria Estefan is a good pop song with an Olympic theme. Featured on both her solo album, Destiny, and Rhythm Of The Games: 1996 Olympic Games Album. Celine Dion's Power of the Dream was specially commissioned for the opening ceremonies and was written by fellow Canadian David Foster, R&B producer Babyface, and Linda Thompson.
Sydney, 2000 Nikki Webster - At the opening ceremony, this "hero girl" performed We'll Be One. Vanessa Amorosi, the Australian pop star, performed Heroes Live Forever at the Opening Ceremony. Olivia Newton John and John Farnham did a duet, Dare to Dream, at the Opening ceremony. Olivia wore a sparkling silver gown as the two of them performed to an a NBC audience estimated at around 4 billion.
