Summary:
A musician should care more about fans than his or her bank statement. Even singer Christina Aguilera does not enjoy pop music. She recently said in an interview, "Pop music is actually my least favourite kind of music because it lacks real depth." So why does she sing it?

Today's popular music is practically shoved down the throat of everyone in North America. It is heard everywhere . . . on television, radio, shopping malls, in restaurants -- and it always sounds the same.
Stars like the Backstreet Boys use formulas concerning love to appeal to the weak minds of adolescents, giving them the idea that every relationship can eventually turn into `pure love' to make money, while Britney Spears basically sexualises 12-year-old girls and boys.
Although pop musicians such as the Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera have achieved commercial success, their music lacks uniqueness, they demonstrate minimal artistic effort, and they substitute shallow showmanship for musical knowledge and talent.
Pop songs do not set themselves apart from others. The same songwriter writes for several so-called musicians. For example, Lou Pearlman writes songs for the Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, LFO and Britney Spears. What happened to diversity? How can bands set themselves apart when record labels will not make a deal unless the music is suited to the market trends? How many songs can pop stars sing about relationships and social activities anyway? Stars depend on everyone else for their creativity. Even their stage routines are choreographed for them.
Pop music is a mass product designed for mass consumption. The music industry and pop stars are not concerned with anything but selling as many records as possible, very quickly. A musician should care more about fans than his or her bank statement. Even singer Christina Aguilera does not enjoy pop music. She recently said in an interview, "Pop music is actually my least favourite kind of music because it lacks real depth." So why does she sing it?
Pop stars do not need an education. However, music composers attend post-secondary institutions and study music history, criticism, theory, harmony, counterpoint, rhythm, melody and ear training. Composers, lyricists and producers make anywhere from $7,600 to $68,500 at best, but their average earnings are only $34,500. The so-called pop musicians who do not write, produce, compose or play instruments, rake in hundreds of thousands of dollars and they don't have a proper education. The music industry's goal for pop musicians is to produce and sell as many records and concert stubs as possible; therefore pop stars value commercial success over artistic effort.
Pop stars use sex appeal to make money, and it sells because you are always going to have a 14-year-old kid looking for a good- looking boy or girl. That simply means our society is shallow, because if it comes down to who has the nicest body and prettier face when buying a CD instead of who has something more important to say, we are getting pretty small-minded.
