I am a big fan of Van Gogh's. That he is so popular is in a way too bad, as I usually go in for the second best known thing. Some odd examples of this in popular culture would be that I would take Pepsi over Coke, Burger King over MacDonalds, Christina Aguilera over Brittany Spears, brunettes over blondes, a Timex before a Rolex, and that sort of thing... So maybe Van Gogh can be taken over, say, Monet, but Vincent is ahead to begin with so its hard to make the adjustment.
Anyway, it looks like he sliced off his ear. But in reading up on this I have come upon two interesting theories as to just why. One is romantic and very starving artist. The second is simply medical and I like far less. Maybe in the end it was a combination of the two plus something else even, but I will briefly describe both theories.
The first has a prostitute looking to compliment Vincent. He is not much to look at (I think there was nothing wrong with his looks), so she compliments his ears. He later, being the proverbial poster boy for mental illness and such, cuts off his ear with the intention of giving it to her. His heart was ready to love and sacrifice, we might say, but not in what most persons would deem an appropriate way.
The second has him suffering from something called temporal lobe epilepsy. His ear and/or something he is hearing through it has become very bothersome. You know its been said somewhere that if your eye offends you, pluck it out. So, armed with a sharp tool and a highly self-stylized brand of what I would call sophist- pragmatism, he cuts off his ear.
Whatever the case may be, the man had some issues. But to paint like that is genius. And why so many artists suicide themselves (as is the case later on) is beyond me, but maybe it goes with the terrain. Seeing his paintings make me want to reach inwards or outwards to some depths, to know some essence or some such thing. It makes me happy, inspired and nervous all at the same time. I could use a Double Whopper with cheese to calm my nerves but there is no Burger King around here. Oh well. Such is life. Go Van Gogh go. |
