Teen sensation Christina Aguilera's appearance at a suburban Chicago department store on Jan. 16 sparked a near melee after 4,000 fans showed up to see the eighteen-year old. According to Chicago's Sun Times, fans clogged roads and destroyed merchandise inside the Target Greatland store in Schaumburg, Ill.

Worse still, a twenty-eight-year-old woman was struck by a motorist as she tried to cross Schaumburg Road (she was treated at the scene). Emergency medical technicians also attended to fans suffering asthma attacks. But no one was taken to the hospital or arrested, according to Schaumburg Police Sgt. Paul Rizzo.

The chaos forced store officials to halt the event halfway through Aguilera's appearance. According to manager Matthew Thomas, the store only anticipated 2,000 fans, and was unprepared when double the amount showed up. Target employees said that the original plan was to only let the first 500 people in line into the store to get autographs, but when so many turned out a decision was made to allow a separate viewing line that put people within fifteen feet of the singer. Target staff summoned additional police to help evacuate the entire building, leaving many Aguilera fans -- who had been in line all night -- in tears.

Aguilera later apologized to her fans on the air at event sponsor WBBM. She was scheduled to make a second appearance in Schaumburg at GameWorks on Saturday night, but that event was private and there were no incidents reported.
