Bandit Lites gets Stripped with Christina Aguilera2003

The house lights go down; a video screen comes alive with flickering images…then boom…Christina Aguilera takes the stage and she owns the place. Fresh off the Justified and Stripped tour, the Pop Princess is taking Stripped on the road for her first major European tour. Christina puts on a very energetic show and the lighting design reflects that. The show takes on an almost cabaret-like feeling. The tone of the lighting must change to match the mood, and flow from up tempo dance numbers, to sultry emotional songs featured in the set as well as the ballads and torch songs also performed by Christina. Having so many styles of lighting required for one show is a challenge that Lighting Designer Barry Halpin meets with aplomb.

The stage has several different aspects to it that Barry had to take into account. Of the several “areas” on the stage, like shadow boxes and a wall of fans, one of the biggest highlights is Christina’s trademark “X.” During the song “Genie in a Bottle” she is rolled onto the stage strapped to the X, a la Hannibal Lector. Light bathes her body as her dancers help her untie herself and she emerges as the genie from the bottle. Halpin had to recreate the rig from scratch after an accident earlier in the year destroyed the rig used on the North American tour. “I watched the concert videos and made decisions on how to design a more compact rig than the one in the States, but also keeping the look that Christina wanted” said Halpin. “The production team that is in place made that job surprisingly easy. Rob Kern and the crew are great. It’s a pleasure to work with people who are so committed to making the show a success.” Halpin used a lot of open whites and contrasting colors to create a strong mood that reflects the music and dance. The result of the open lighting is a stark and “stripped” look and feel to the show. He also had to figure video into the equation. There are several differently shaped “wild screens” which fly in and out on a Branam system. There is a lot going on in the different areas of the stage, and the lighting has to be able to keep up with the on-stage movements of an 8 member dance ensemble as well as Aguilera. Making use of a number of Martin fixtures, Halpin is able to create a fast paced look that perfectly compliments the music. The tour is currently in Europe and will continue in Japan and Australia, before returning to North America next summer.

The lighting rig consists of five main trusses, two flying arch trusses and uprights at both stage left and stage right. The main trusses are ringed with Martin MAC 600s and the center stage and upstage trusses also hold 14 Martin MAC 2000s. The two flying arches are each hung with 4 MAC 2000s and the uprights hold 8 MAC 2000s. The sides of the stage floor are lined with a number of MAC 600s & MAC 500’s. The show is controlled with from 2 Hog II consoles.
