Christina Aguilera has announced a 35-city summer concert tour with opening act Destiny's Child. The tour kicks off July 31 in Kansas City, Missouri, and wraps it up 11 weeks later in mid-October. Dates and venues for concerts in New Orleans, Houston, Denver, Salt Lake City, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Phoenix will be announced shortly.
Tickets for the first several concerts of the 35-city tour -- which co-sponsored by Sears and Levi's -- go on sale May 5. To promote the tour, Sears will feature Aguilera-themed experience areas and merchandise, including Levi's jeans displays, throughout its 860 locations nationwide.
Aguilera tells LAUNCH that the summer tour will feature plenty of new surprises. "It will be a little bit more about the vocal, too. We might end the show some night's with my cover of Etta James's 'At Last.' It will have a lot of fun stuff -- a lot of new things to listen for from the album -- some changes here and there and changing it up a bit. It will be really interesting.
"I'm really excited about going out with my band and dancers, and giving the show an edgy theatrical vibe," adds Aguilera. "Right now, we're having fun getting into the creative aspects of planning the show. Fans can expect me to cover new ground, doing more blues, more soul, and lots more choreography."
The singer and her tour sponsors have also teamed up with Do Something -- the national nonprofit organization co-founded in 1993 by actor Andrew Shue -- which inspires young people to believe that change is possible, and teaches them how to take action and make the world a better place. The new initiative, dubbed "Come On Over and Do Something," consists of two parts: the Sears and Levi's Youth Empowerment Grants and the online Youth Action Guide. A total of 50 Sears and Levi's Youth Empowerment Grants will be awarded nationwide to young people under 18 throughout the course of the tour. All winners will receive a $500 grant to fund their community-service projects. Winners in Aguilera's 35 tour cities also receive tickets to see her in concert and to meet her backstage before the show.
Aguilera's latest single, the ballad "I Turn To You," is currently at Number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100. She tells LAUNCH why her favorite songs to sing are usually ballads. "I think ballads definitely allow me to let go a lot more because of the fact that, if it's a slow song, you get to get into it more," she says. "You have more time to take your time with and really stretch your notes out and whatnot. I mean, yeah. I mean, ballads -- I do really connect with and I think that's whenever an audience gets to see what I'm really about as a vocalist, so I do tend to favor the ballads."
Aguilera is currently recording a Spanish language album produced by Rudy Perez. In the months ahead, she will also prepare a Christmas album that will be ready in time for the holiday season.
