Forget pretty-faced teen dreamboats like 'N Sync and Britney Spears. The 2001 MTV Video Music Awards is all about...Christopher Walken?!?

Yup, the Deer Hunter is MTV's newest darling. Thanks to some acrobatic dance moves by the typically morose actor, Fatboy Slim's "Weapon of Choice" picked up a field-best nine nominations Monday for the annual VMAs, including Video of the Year, Best Choreography and Best Direction for the clip's quirky auteur, Spike Jonze.

The bizarre video--which features the 58-year-old Walken showing off his lighter side by getting down in a hotel lobby--marks the second time Jonze and Fatboy Slim have formed a winning partnership. The pair picked up three MTV Moon Men in 1999 for "Praise You," the home-video-style clip with Jonze leading an under-practiced community dance group. (Walken's a music video vet, having made his debut in Madonna's 1993 clip for "Bad Girl.)

For the top prize, Fatboy Slim will face off against last year's big VMA winner, Eminem, for "Stan"--his stalker-fan duet with Dido--as well as U2 for "Beautiful Day," Janet Jackson for "All For You," Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot for "Get Ur Freak On" and Moulin Rouge divas Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya and Pink, for their remake of "Lady Marmalade."

Once again, MTV's awardsfest will remain in New York this year, returning to the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center September 6 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. So far, U2 and J Records' breakout Alicia Keys have been announced as performers for the 18th annual ceremony. But there's still no word on who will snag the coveted hosting gig. (Marlon, Shawn: Don't hold your breath.)

Despite the Walken windfall, 'N Sync and its teen-pop ilk are still well-represented in this year's nominations. 'N Sync's quick-cutting bling-bling video "Pop" scored six nods, including a Viewers Choice nomination. Other contenders for the people-friendly prize are the Backstreet Boys for "The Call," Destiny's Child for "Independent Women Part I," Eve with Gwen Stefani for "Let Me Blow Ya Mind," Limp Bizkit for "My Way" and Nelly for "Ride Wit Me."

Also picking up six nominations were Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot, the ladies of "Lady Marmalade" and Dido, who can say "Thank You" to Eminem for assistance on five of those nominations. She's up for Best Female Video for "Thank You," which is the song Eminem sampled for "Stan," which is up for Video of the Year, Best Male Video, Best Rap Video, Best Cinematography and Best Direction.

Speaking of duets, Orange County's ska-pop band No Doubt wasn't nominated for anything this year, but that didn't stop its frontgal, Gwen Stefani, from picking up a handful of nominations. Her duet with Moby, "South Side," scored a nod for Best Male Video, while her other duet with Eve for "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" received three nominations.

Other multiple nominees Monday included U2 and Destiny's Child, scoring five nods apiece, Janet Jackson with four and Aerosmith, Nelly and Robbie Williams with three each.
