From the 75th Annual Academy Awards® on March 23rd to the August MTV VMA Awards, showstopping smooches were all the rage. This year, Tinseltown stars proved that a kiss is not just a kiss.

It was a memorable night at the Oscars® when the biggest surprise of the night was ADRIEN BRODY's Best Actor win for his role in the seven-time-nominated holocaust drama, 'The Pianist.' The shocked 29-year-old actor took the stage and planted a full smooch on presenter HALLE BERRY, then mused, "There comes a time in life when everything seems to make sense. And this is not one of those times!"

That kiss was the talk of the town until the much-hyped "2003 Video Music Awards" on August 28. MTV got the party started right -- with a jaw-dropping opening number featuring "brides" BRITNEY SPEARS and CHRISTINA AGUILERA strutting out of a wedding cake and singing the tune that MADONNA performed nearly 20 years ago at the 1984 VMAs, "Like A Virgin."

And then? The original material girl (looking dapper in a black, fitted tux) joined the all-girl posse as the three sang her latest tune, "Hollywood." Madonna then proceeded to kiss both blushing brides on the lips -- how's that for an opening act?!

The year started off with the 29th Annual People's Choice Awards on January 12. It was a big, fat, thrilling night for NIA VARDALOS when 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' was crowned Favorite Comedy Motion Picture, recognizing its long journey from low-budget play to on-screen success, and 'Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring' won two trophies. "Friends" star JENNIFER ANISTON arrived walking with the aid of a bamboo cane because she had recently broken her foot. That didn't keep her from winning her third consecutive crystal flame trophy for Favorite Female Television Performer, and the show also won its third trophy for Favorite TV Comedy Series.

Then it was on to the 60th Annual Golden Globes where 'Chicago' razzle-dazzled the evening, dancing its way through the top Musical or Comedy film categories to win Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress at the star-studded Hollywood ceremony.

A shocked RENÉE ZELLWEGER screamed when her name was announced, beating out CATHERINE ZETA-JONES for Best Actress in 'Chicago.' "You're a goddess and I'm so glad the world now knows what you can do," said Renée about her smiling co-star. RICHARD GERE was equally surprised with his win for Best Actor, thanking his choreographer for "why I got this [award], 'cause the jerk actually tap dances at the end of this thing."

Next up were the 9th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, the only industry accolades devoted solely to actors honoring actors. The SAG Awards was a relaxed, emotional and energetic event, with 'Chicago' again taking home several honors, including Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture. Renée Zellweger won Outstanding Female Actor, while co-star Catherine Zeta-Jones danced away a winner with the Outstanding Supporting Female Actor accolade.

CLINT EASTWOOD got the celeb crowd on its feet as he was presented with the SAG Life Achievement Honor. "This is heavy," an upbeat Clint joked as he held the statue. "Where's SCHWARZENEGGER when you need him?"

When it comes to music, the Grammys are still the name of the game. Held in New York City for the first time in five years, the 45th Annual Grammy Awards heated up the Big Apple. "This show is being hosted by nobody except the people of New York City," said former 'Graduate' DUSTIN HOFFMAN, who introduced a reunited SIMON & GARFUNKEL to open the broadcast. The Lifetime Achievement Award recipients, who have not performed together in over a decade, played an acoustic version of "Sound of Silence."

But newcomer NORAH JONES owned the night, winning a stunning total of eight Grammys including the Best Pop Vocal Album award, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and the Best New Artist award. Her album, Come Away With Me, featured the sultry tune "Don't Know Why." "I never ever thought that the music I made would become popular music, so this is amazing," said Jones. "I feel really blessed and really lucky to have had the year I've had."

And last, but not least, was September's 55th Annual Emmy Awards. "The West Wing," "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "The Sopranos" were the top dogs among a broad pack of winners under the roof of L.A.'s Shrine Auditorium. But the touching note of the evening was a loving tribute from HENRY WINKLER to the late JOHN RITTER, who died on September 11.
