A day after staking her claim for Grammy glory, Norah Jones nearly came away with a major upset on the charts.
The jazzy pop singer never cracked the Top 10 during the holiday rush, but her Come Away with Me has been the sales show-stealer ever since. Jones' 45-week-old debut disc re-entered the Top 10 at seven on last week's album charts and followed up this week by nearly dethroning the Eminem-led 8 Mile soundtrack.
According to Nielsen SoundScan, for the week ended Sunday Come Away with Me sold 118,000 copies to finish as runner-up to the 8 Mile disc, which moved just 900 copies more.
Following closely behind, Avril Lavigne proved to be the only other artist to sell six-figures this past week as Let Go took third place with 113,000 copies.
No new albums made the Top 200, and none is expected to make any major impression next week, either. Ultimately, next week's top charters will ultimately be decided by who benefits most from their recent Grammy Award nominations, unveiled yesterday. Last year, leading contenders U2, Alicia Keys and India.Arie all enjoyed significant sales bumps after the nominee announcements.
Expect Jones and Lavigne to be in the hunt for the top slot, considering they were two of the eight artists who racked up a leading five nominations each. Jones' nominations included Album and Record of the Year and Best New Artist. Lavigne's included Best New Artist and Song of the Year.
The Dixie Chicks' Home, which held the number four spot for a second week, is the only other Top 10 album this week nominated in major categories. The bluegrass-driven disc is up for Album of the Year and Best Country Album, two of the four nods to the Texas trio.
The rest of the Top 10 were Christina Aguilera's Stripped at five, Jennifer Lopez's This Is Me...Then at six, Justin Timberlake's Justified at seven, Shania Twain's Up! at eight, Aaliyah's posthumous I Care 4 U at nine and the megahits compilation Now That's What I Call Music! 11 returning to the Top 10 in the final slot.
Overall, the post-holidays week resulted in another sales depression--a pattern that happens each year. The only album in the Top 200 to show any type of sales increase was the soundtrack to Vin Diesel's XXX, which benefits from the flick's recent DVD/video release. The XXX soundtrack sold 16,000 copies, jumping to number 85.
To recap, here's a rundown of the Top 10 albums for the first week of 2003:
