Pop Stars Shine At Ford CenterJun 2003

Pop star Justin Timberlake sang all the hits from his first solo effort, danced intensely and flashed his impish smile to the delight of his 12,000 fans at a concert Wednesday night at the Ford Center.

The mostly female crowd screamed wildly, danced by their seats and sang along.
Timberlake was the main attraction of the “Justified and Stripped Tour,” spending 75 minutes on stage.

The other headliner, pop star Christina Aguilera, went first, wowing fans with the range of her voice and her skin-baring outfits.

Though only in his 20s, Timberlake has become a veteran performer touring with his group ’NSync. It showed as he repeatedly played to the crowd, encouraging them to sing along or just “make some noise.” They did, particularly every time he screamed out “Oklahoma City.”

He sang and danced mostly nonstop, but paused to answer a question shouted out from the front rows.

“What color are my socks?” he said. “Of all things, what color are my socks. They’re black. They go with my outfit.”

He sang a medley of his ’NSync hits, but stuck mostly to his R&B-inspired songs from his solo release. Fans particularly enjoyed the sing-along hit “Senorita.” He picked up a guitar for one number and danced atop a piano for another.

Fans screamed loudest for “Cry Me a River” and his finale, “Like I Love You.”

Aguilera pleased her fans the most with her hard-driving defiant dance hits “Dirrty” and “Fighter.”

“I finally got to do my own thing,” the 22-year-old singer said in thanking the audience for supporting her controversial new release “Stripped.”

Aguilera mixed her 75 minutes on stage with elaborate dance numbers — complete with flames, confetti and fog — and slow songs. She tossed in a bold male strip tease, singing “Walk Away” while she watched one of her dancers slide around a pole.

She changed at least half a dozen times, preferring black, skin-bearing costumes that matched her new darker hairdo.
