Making it in the music world is much harder than you think! Christina aguilera tells TV Hits how her pop career has made her "that much stronger"...

Is being famous all you expected it to be, and is it hard work?
I had been warned that my life was going to change and that I would somtimes feel very lonely. But how can I complain about living in luxury hotels, touring around the world and meeting so many people? I have no regrets at all. When I was a kid, loneliness was my best friend and I owe my success to putting all of my friends and desires into the music. So now that the music has brought me all the success I've ever wanted, how could I be furious now?

What made you feel lonely in your childhood?
My father was a soldier and he is Ecuadorian, my mother is a pianist and she is Irish. When I was a child, we moved constantly - New Jersey, where I was born, and to Japan and Florida. I never had time to make friends. Sometimes at home you could feel the tension. Just like a sensation of verbal violence. My childhood was not that easy. For me, suffering has been the best teacher. It is without doubt the reason why I grew and was fascinated by music. It was a way of usng my energy in a creative way. Hard times in life give you something to overcome.

Why did you choose a career in pop music if you knew it meant more loneliness?
It's true to say that everyone is alone in this business. But when you are on stage, you can experience happiness, worship and love at the same time. It's really great, when you see so many people showing you that they love you. It's hard to be understood, but it is equally hard to listen to others and appreciate their advice. Fortunately, in life I am not as alone as people seem to believe. When my parents separated, my mother found peace again with her second husband. I have four younger sisters that I really love.

Do they love having a big sister who is a pop star?
[Laughs] When I was home, they went crazy because I would sing so much. My family has gotten used to it, and it became a normal situation. One day, Rachel, my youngest sister, said she admired me and that I was her role model. I was really moved. She is 15 years old and she has such a great voice, that it would not surprise me if she became a singer, too. She is so beautiful, I'm sure she would succeed!

What advice would you give her?
Never give up. hang on tight! It was like a twister when 'Genie In A Bottle' was released. I had to promote it throughout the United Stated and Europe. It went, very quickly, to number one in 18 countries. Everybody wanted me to come over and I was forced to increase my period of promotion. After 72 days of non-stop working and travelling, I was exhausted. And my life has not slowed down since then. In fact, life has gotten even faster, but I know how to deal with it better.

Is it tough?
It is rather hard to have this way of life; to be ready to go everyday with a packed suitcase and sleep in hotels. It's rather insane. Fortunately, I am well-grounded and my family supports me a lot, even though I do not see them often.

You must be so brave!
I am stronger than I look. I learnt, thanks to my down periods, that anger could give me strength.

What would you do if your career was all over tomorrow?
I'd like to stay in the business. I like comedy but I [don't] have time to go to dramatic art classes. Singing can always be a means of expressing feelings.
