Cole Hackett and Tia Larrison are willing to stand firm for their convictions in a teenage society swimming in steamy images, racy lyrics and questionable antics of pop stars such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
Hackett, 15, and Larrison, 14, are among 20 or so teenagers in the region who meet once a month to discuss their decision of shunning sexual intercourse until marriage. The idea grew from a fund-raiser for Hope Unlimited last fall in which abstinence education was discussed. Teens seized the idea and began spreading the word about a pizza fellowship/support group that meets monthly.
The group meets the third week of the month, usually on a Monday or Tuesday depending on schedules, at Pizza Inn, 1001 Joe Clifton Drive. The next meeting will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. Teens pay $6 for pizza. The group is open to pre-teens and teens ages 10-18.
Teens "have a lot of opportunities, but they choose to come," said Bonnie Burchett, a volunteer counselor for Hope Unlimited who is helping manage the group. "I honestly believe that shows they have a willfulness to come."
Hackett, a 15-year-old homeschooler, says those teens coming just for pizza and conversation probably won't last. Speakers address the group, and the floor opens for discussion.
Larrison, who attends a Christian school, and Hackett say other teens they've told about the group haven't looked down on their decision. "The temptations are so high in schools and everywhere," Hackett said. "There are so many people who need the support. That's a big reason why they will come" to meetings.
Burchett said the positive response "goes to show that kids are crying out. They have a strong desire to be led to a pure life. They have a strong desire for that encouragement."
Parents can preach to their children not to engage in premarital sex, but "without any support or God in their hearts, they won't be able to stand up against the temptation because it's too strong," Burchett said. |
