As reported Friday, the cancellation of Christina Aguilera's entire summer tour leaves Summerfest organizers scrambling, with less than two months to book a replacement for the now-open June 29 date at the Marcus Amphitheater.

According to a statement released by Camp Aguilera, the Mouseketeer-Gone-Wild is under doctor's orders to rest strained vocal cords, causing the cancellation of 28 dates around the country. Industry gossip chat rooms such as VelvetRope.com, however, were buzzing with rumors that the tour was a no-go because it was selling poorly.

"I have no idea on that one," said Summerfest entertainment director Bob Babisch, adding the cancellation notice he'd received mentioned that a doctor's note was available.

"I didn't ask to see it," Babisch quipped.

Right now, Summerfest's top booker has bigger things on his mind, like grabbing the best act available to fill the suddenly free spot.

In 2002, Babisch had to scramble to find a replacement for Alanis Morissette when she canceled her June 27 Summerfest Amphitheater date - and he wound up with Sheryl Crow, who put on a hugely successful show.

Who's he going after now in the Absence of Aguilera?

"A breathing act - someone who's got working vocal cords at the time," Babisch replied with a tired laugh. He declined to name specific acts that might make the Marcus bill.

A quick scan through the schedules of currently touring artists, however, suggests a few possibilities:

Evanescence
The top-selling rock act of 2003 is still in Billboard's Top Ten, more than a year after the release of its Goth-tinged debut "Fallen," and has been an opportunistic touring act. The band's booking agent, Dave Kirby of The Agency Group, recently told Billboard, "If there is an opportunity to play in front of people, we go there."

Evanescence is in Europe through mid-June and then taking a break until a U.S. tour starts in mid-July.

Avril Lavigne
The Canadian rock chick has confirmed she'll be touring to support her upcoming release "Under My Skin," due in stores May 25, but so far has only announced a handful of radio show and festival dates in May and early June on the East Coast and Europe.

Mary J. Blige
She's on the road in the States, but hasn't announced any dates between June 16 and July 3.

Aerosmith
The classic rock act is on the road, including a Thursday show in Madison, but the North American leg of their tour wraps June 28 in Ohio, just a looooong overnight tour bus ride away from Maier Festival Park.

Yes
The prog-rock legend is currently on the road in the U.S. but skipping Milwaukee. The band moves to Europe in early June, but wraps its tour there June 23 in Germany - leaving just enough time to hop on a plane to Milwaukee.

Pink
The pop diva turned punk grrrl has a sprinkling of dates in Australia and Europe, but nothing during Summerfest's run.

Aside from Aguilera's fans, the biggest loser may be opening act Chingy. Already a radio hit-maker and draw on the rap circuit, the St. Louis star could have made an impression on a broader pop audience by hitting the road with Aguilera.

Chingy's publicist did not return calls and e-mails for comment.
