BLONDE AMBITION: Jessica Simpson isn't as stupid as she pretends to be. And, really, how could she be and still be capable of simple tasks like feeding herself and forming sentences?
It takes a fairly smart and centred person to be able to recognize and fully exploit the professional potential of playing dumb. And by cheerily embracing and even enhancing the ditzy persona she presents on her hit reality show, Newlyweds, Simpson has quickly become an industry unto herself.
Another new season of Newlyweds. A cross-over cameo on the even more highly rated Apprentice. A top-selling album and concert tour. Her own line of taste-enchanced "lickable" cosmetics and body-care products.
"It's been a really good year," Simpson acknowledges, calling in from the road. "I've been incredibly busy, touring, working non-stop, finishing up the second season of Newlyweds ...
"But I'm young. I have the rest of my life to relax."
And to produce pop-star progeny with her husband/co-star, Nick Lachey, a somewhat less successful solo spinoff from the boy band, 98 Degrees.
Though not quite yet, contrary to recent rumours. "At some point, we will definitely have children. And they will be my proudest achievement."
Simpson started out in Christian pop — her manager father is a Baptist minister — releasing her first album at the tender age of 13. At which point she unsuccessfully auditioned for the reborn Mickey Mouse Club, losing out to the likes of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
"When I started, I was always getting lumped in with Britney and Christina, you know, the `belly-baring blondes.' But I think that now, with the show, and especially with the new album, I've finally established my own identity."
And achieved a kind of turnabout revenge — Simpson actually beat out Britney Spears for the Daisy Duke role in the movie remake of the southern-fried '70s series, Dukes Of Hazzard.
"It's very exciting," Simpson enthuses. "I can't wait to get into those shorts! Of course, I wasn't even born when the show was first on. But I'm from the South — I grew up in Texas — so I've seen every episode in reruns."
Her own TV career continues to flourish, despite ABC's axing of Jessica, a sitcom pilot that cast her as a TV interviewer. The show's problems, the network insists, had nothing to do with Simpson herself, who was apparently the best thing about it.
"They wanted to recast and reshoot, but I disagreed," Simpson confirms. "We compromised, and now, instead of the sitcom, Nick and I are going to do a bunch more variety specials."
Last April's Sonny & Cher-style Nick & Jessica Variety Hour turned out to be a huge ratings hit for ABC.
Lachey was equally available for the specials, the network having also passed on Hot Mom, a Gina Gershon sitcom pilot in which he had a supporting role.
Not that we are likely to ever see the star-crossed couple clash over career issues (or indeed, anything more controversial than dirty underwear) on the up-close-and-personal Newlyweds.
"People can say what they want," Simpson sniffs. "Nick and I just aren't competitive."
Meanwhile, the trickle-down effect of Simpson's success is even more of a family affair — little sister, Ashlee, a singer herself and a regular on 7th Heaven, has now got her own solo reality show, set to follow Newlyweds on next season's MTV schedule. |
