It may not be as hot as Research in Motion stock, but there's brisk trading in election results thanks to a Canadian-based trading firm.

Shorcan Index has introduced an election stock market that allows investors to trade on the popular vote they think the major political parties will win in the June 28 election.

Shorcan's Election Indicator works just like a stock, but in this case investors speculate on where Liberals, Conservatives, NDP, Bloc Quebecois and Green Party will end up when the popular vote is tallied election night.

"We've had a lot of traffic, particularly on the Conservative party and the Liberals," said Greg Morgan, a spokesman for Shorcan.

Shorcan plans to donate all of the profits to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, and has encouraged investors to do the same.

Improving fortunes for the Conservatives saw a bull market for Tory stock, Morgan said.

"For a couple of days, yeah we saw a lot of buyers for Conservatives," he said. "It's partially twigged to whatever happens in the media."

The election index is open to accredited investors from Ontario, Quebec, B.C. and Manitoba.

Layton's with it

TORONTO (CP) - Jack Layton wants to show that he's one hip dude.

The federal New Democrat leader took his words to the young people Thursday as he appeared on a MuchMusic election TV show with a live audience - the only party leader to do so, said the show's host.

The audience asked questions on the party's stance on marijuana and gay marriage, homelessness and post-secondary education.

The issue of pot was top of the list, and the host quoted an online questionnaire where Layton responded 'yes' to having inhaled "and some say never exhaled," the host said.

"That's my story and I'm sticking to it," Layton said when asked to elaborate.

Of three song choices, The Black Eyed Peas song "Where's the Love" best described the New Democrats, Layton said rather that Abba's "Take a Chance on Me" or Christina Aguilera's "Fighter."

And with the choice of being a wrestler, a rock star or a motorcycle rider as an alternative profession, Layton said he'd be "the aging rock star."

If he had the choice, Layton told the audience he'd drop the voting age to 16, and institute proportional representation.

But it wasn't all rock videos and music. Layton was faced with a heckler who yelled "why are you against the Clarity Act, why do you want to allow Quebec to separate?"

"We want to build with Quebecers," Layton responded. The heckler was quickly shown the door.

After the show, Layton walked the nearby streets talking to youth and stepped into Speaker's Corner - a booth where the public can sound off about the latest issues in the hopes their segment will get on the air. Layton made a pitch for the NDP and encouraged everyone to vote.
