 "Christina Aguilera's anticipation of being brought down by every journalist manifests itself in an ill-disguised contempt. When answering questions, she talks to empty air, as though she can't bear, or deign, to look upon you."
So writes Holly Millea in the July issue of Elle on encountering the multi-octave pop princess. As 23-year-old Christina grandly extols the virtues of L'Hermitage Hotel, where she has agreed to be questioned, Millea observes, "I like that she is channeling Norma Desmond."
After 60 minutes, a PR person approaches, telling the writer, "Christina only ever gives an hour." The singer puts a finer point on it by adding, "Trust me, you have enough. . I've done this before."
Now, just so Christina won't be difficult with the next interviewer, Millea does catch her for a second sit-down, where she is "open and good to go ... even laughing about the latest tabloid stories." And the songstress expounds on her drive: "I never wanted to be put in a place where I felt helpless or that I needed a man in any way, shape or form to support me, to put a roof over my head, to put money in my pocket." (Hard knocks as a kid put a resilient veneer on the adult woman: "You've got to be a pretty tough guy to deal with a tough broad.")
Christina, looking luscious, is on the cover, with eight pages inside. Maybe she has attitude, but it's supported by media interest. And talent. Which means - don't expect her to change. Actually, we wouldn't want her to. |
