The initial shock of winning New Zealand Idol six weeks ago may have worn off but the polite, quietly spoken and slightly serious Ben Lummis still looks a bit overwhelmed, nervous even, when faced with adoring fans.

"No, I'm still not used to this," he admitted, as a group of excited Hastings Girls' High School year nine pupils waited to be introduced.

Several got teary eyed but managed to contain themselves before Lummis arrived, although the screaming wasn't.

If their reaction is anything to go by, Lummis is flavour of the month right now with their age group.

He was in Hastings for just a few hours yesterday, being on a swift greet-the-media, promote-the-new-album tour of New Zealand.

His debut single, the chart-topping They Can't Take That Away, has gone four times platinum. The comments about his debut album, "One Road", released on Tuesday, have so far been kind, such as describing it as a "slick mix of R&B in the Usher vein, slow-jam ballads and a touch of reggae with romantic lyrics".

That's great, Lummis says, and breaks into a big smile.

BMG pulled in some big guns to contribute to the 12-track album, songwriters whose credits include Christina Aguilera, Jamelia and Kylie Minogue. It also includes It's All Good, which Lummis co-wrote.

Songwriting isn't new to him, but it's the first time his efforts will be heard by a wide audience.

He got a bit of stick over choosing mostly "old" songs to cover on the show, one of which, Seal's A Kiss From A Rose, is on One Road.

But Lummis says it was all he could remember of mainstream music. As a born-again Christian, he's spent the past six years singing gospel in church.

"Some people like it, some don't, and I understand that. I decided to make a stand and not be shy," he says.

Based in Auckland for several years, his last job - teacher aide for special needs children - is a good indication of his character.

"I was a bit hesitant, it wasn't something I would choose (to do) but it turned out to be the best job I've ever had."

Lummis will be back in Hawke's Bay on July 9 with six of the other top 10 Idol singers to perform at the Pettigrew-Green Arena.

He's looking forward to going on the road, saying he misses runner-up and now great mate Michael Murphy the most.

It's not the first time he's toured the country. Lummis attended Excel School of Performing Arts in Auckland in 1998, and was on its 1999 tour which included Hawke's Bay.

It would be easy to be cynical about his fan base and his music, but whatever you might read or hear, Lummis does seem like a genuine nice guy still getting used to the idea someone - anyone - would want his autograph.
