Gardendale minister Steve Gaines took his message to the Southern Baptist Convention Wednesday, and a major part of that message concerned homosexuality in America.

Gardendale Baptist Church was filled with hundreds of people who watched their pastor address them and many others via satellite from Indiana, the location of this year’s convention.

Gaines called for a ban on same-sex marriages and spoke out against homosexuality in general.

“We must help curb the epidemic spread of lesbianism by telling our daughters and our young girls that the passionate kisses shared by Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at MTV's Video Music Awards last August were an abomination to a holy God,” said Gaines.

Those who attended were pleased with what they heard from their pastor.

“I appreciated it, because that's what we need,” said Birmingham resident Kristie Lee. “As a church, we need to address these issues.”

“He just preached the Bible, and he's trying to get our country to return to the roots that we need, to return to our values,” said Rick Nelson, a Gardendale resident.

Along with former chief justice Roy Moore's stand on the Ten Commandments, Wednesday’s appearance by Gaines put Alabama once again at the center of a religious battle.

Some in Birmingham are put off by the glare of that spotlight.

“I think that throughout the years, there are lots of different things that have been referred to as abominations that are completely commonplace now,” said Marion Boisman, a Birmingham resident.

Thirty-seven states currently have laws forbidding same sex marriages, including Alabama. But gay rights activists have gained ground in states like Massachusetts, where in May same-sex unions were legalized.

“I'm proud of them,” said Boisman. “I think they're moving forward. They're being brave.”

In addition to Wednesday’s appearance, Gaines was recently elected to a high office inside the Southern Baptist Convention, something that is expected to bring more religious attention to Alabama.
