The commercial contracts and planning deals for the £5 billion development of the Millennium Dome and its surrounding areas have been completed, it was announced today.

Infrastructure work on the Greenwich, south London, site will begin later this year, with work to turn the Dome into a 20,000-seater sports and entertainment complex starting next year.

The development of the site includes more than 10,000 new homes, new schools, a new health centre, offices and shops over a 20-year period.

The regeneration of the area will create 4,000 construction jobs and lead to an estimated 24,000 permanent new jobs.

The agreements have been signed between Meridian Delta Ltd (MDL), regeneration agency English Partnerships which owns the Dome site, the Anschutz Entertainment Group which will develop and operate the inside-Dome complex, and the London Borough of Greenwich.

MDL director Bert Martin said today: “We are determined that the Greenwich Peninsula will set new benchmarks in urban mixed use development and become one of London’s finest districts, providing a unique blend of entertainment, business, residential and community uses.”

Work on the first of the new homes is expected to start in spring 2006 and the Dome’s new arena should be completed by spring 2007.

Dome operator AEG is the largest owner of sports teams in the world with its portfolio including the Los Angeles Kings ice hockey team and the Los Angeles Lakers basketball side.

Stars such as Robbie Williams, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Celine Dion have appeared at concerts promoted by AEG, which plans to bring big names to the Dome.

The Dome has remained empty since its 12 months of public opening ended on the last day of 2000.

Although the Dome attracted more than six million visitors, its finances were based on 12 million visits and organisers had to continually ask for more lottery funds from the Millennium Commission.
