Brown graduated with the OHS Class of 2004, capping an eventful senior year in which she won the award for best female solo at every one of the five showchoir competitions she performed at, singing Christina Aguilera's "Soar" with the Onalaska Hilltoppers showchoir. She also won a separate solo contest at one of the competitions, singing "Turn Me On" by Norah Jones.
"It's been a real fun year," she said.
Sunday's concert at Van Riper Park represents her last hurrah, her last chance to sing in front of a hometown crowd, at least until her triumphant return as a successful recording artist. That's in the plans.
In the fall, Brown will start work on her degree in performance at the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston. After that, Brown hopes to make her fortune on her voice and songwriting skills.
"I would just love to be able to write songs and perform my own songs and tour and make my own CDs," Brown said.
She might be hitting her stride at the right time to have success with the music she loves best jazz, blues and soul considering the mainstream success being enjoyed by jazzy artists such as Norah Jones. Brown's musical tastes, though, go back well past Jones. Her musical heroes include Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin.
Before she heads off on the road to success, though, there's this little matter of a hometown concert. After spending the week at a showchoir camp at Millikin University where she won a scholarship by taking first place in last year's talent show Brown will sing three songs with the OHS Jazz Band: Peggy Lee's "Fever," Aretha Franklin's "Respect" and Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the U.S.A."
She's really looking forward to singing with a big band at the Salute to the 4th. "It's awesome to have a band to sing with," she said. "It's just loud and fun. Š I was really happy to have the chance to do it."
For people taking in Sunday's Salute to the 4th, the performance by Brown and the OHS Jazz Band, directed by Jim Knutson, will be just the beginning. After the jazz band, the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra will take the stage for its annual summer "pops" concert, joined by two guest vocalists: Karen Luehne Multer, an OHS graduate who has gone on to a successful career in music and musical theater, and her husband, Steve Multer.
The symphony will present a variety of patriotic music, Broadway songs and a salute to the Big Bands. Some popular American favorites to be featured at the concert include "Ol' Man River," "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic."
The LSO song list also includes John Phillip Sousa's "Semper Fidelis," which will be conducted by Onalaska Police Chief Randy Williams. He won the chance to conduct the orchestra by winning a fund-raising contest.
Three raffle prizes will be given away at the pops concert. The Grand Prize is a 46-inch Hitachi HDTV monitor valued at $2,099. The second prize is a full-day spa package and basket of products from Sue Kolve's Salon and Day Spa valued at $375 and the third prize is a $100 bicycle from Wal-Mart.
And, of course, the night will be capped by a flurry of fireworks, courtesy of the La Crosse Skyrockers.
Activities get started Sunday with the Onalaska Foundation for Educational Excellence's second annual musical chairs competition. In addition to adding rounds and prizes to the musical chairs competition, OFFEE also is adding a new wrinkle to the event by having a live band perform. Grand Picnic, which specializes in turn-of-the-century immigrant fiddle tunes, will provide the music.
