As celebs are so fond of reminding us, they’ve slogged their guts out to achieve fame and fortune. And whether they’re trying to win Oscars or top the charts, they’ve had to endure breakdown – inducing schedules as well as their private lives becoming public property to get where they are today. But some stars make those sacrifices to feed their craving for approval – the approval they never got from their dads. And there are plenty of celebs who won’t be sending a Father’s Day card this year…
Tomb Raider star Angelina Jolie. 28, disowned her actor father Jon Voigt after he appeared on an American chat show last year and told her to “get help for her serious symptoms of real problems, real illness.” Angelina declared, “I no longer regard him as my father.”
Drew Barrymore, 29, blames her dad, John, for her string of failed relationships. “He chose drugs over being a father,” the twice-married star explains. “So it’s not surprising that I’ve had some problems with relationships with men.”
The love life of Halle Berry, 37, has also suffered, because her alcoholic father Jerome used to beat her mother and sister, then walked out when she was four. Halle didn’t even attend his funeral last year.
“I always had a feeling of not being good enough that came from my father leaving,” she admits. “That’s why I haven’t dealt with relationships very well.” She recently divorced her unfaithful husband Eric Benet, 37.

Charlize Theron’s father Charles went a step further – but suffered the consequences. Charlize was 15 when her drunken dad, who was separated form his wife, Gerda, was locked out of their home. “We heard my father banging on the door,” says Charlize, 28. “Next moment a shot rang out. My father shouted that he was going to kill us.” Her mum fired another gun to defend herself and her daughter. “Then I saw my father dead.”
Martine McCutcheon, 28, also says her dad, Thomas, was an alcoholic. She claims he once dangled her from a balcony and threatened to let her go. “I knew from a young age he was someone I didn’t want in my life,” she says.
Jade Goody, 23, is another celeb who has decided she’s better off without he father, Andrew. He has been in jail for most of her life, but sought a reconciliation when Jade found fame. He then begged for snaps of baby Bobby Jack, which he sold to the highest bidder.
Brighton babe Jordan, 26, has severed ties with her father, Ray Infield, too. Ray walked out on her mum, Amy, when Jordan was only four and she no longer sees him. She now thinks of her step dad Paul Price, as her father.
Rachel Steven’s dad, Michael, reckons he’s the victim in their relationship, after his 26-year-old daughter allegedly refused to open his new clothes shop. “She is a total a**hole, he ranted last year. “I don’t care if I never see her again.” Ouch! But Rachel refused to be drawn into a public slanging match, simply saying of his remarks, “It hurt very much.”
Who said celebs had it easy, eh? |
