Summary:

An article about Sasha Armani. Christina mentioned.

But now her tastes have widened and she loves Christina Aguilera, Eminem, Missy Elliott, Usher and Madonna.

Read on for the whole article.

Sasha Armani is the 14-year-old singer from Netherton who'll be the first to take the stage at Blue's big McAlpine Stadium date on July 31. JENNY PARKIN met her

SASHA Armani Woodhead has been showing off since she was knee-high.

As a toddler she'd jump in front of any camera and shout: "Look at me!"

Her mum Debbie Williams says: "When she was two or three she started ballet lessons and by the time she was six she was having weekly singing lessons."

Sasha continues: "I didn't become obsessed with being famous, being an entertainer, until I was seven. I'd dance around my bedroom, singing with a hairbrush - I still do.

"I loved Billie Piper and the Spice Girls. But it was Britney Spears who really inspired me."

Britney appeared on the pop scene when Sasha was eight or nine.

"When she did Baby One More Time she was so cool to look up to. I just copied everything she did.

"I tied my school shirt up like she did, I put my hair in plaits. I memorised all her dance steps."

Sasha's been to see Britney about 10 times - in Las Vegas and Boston as well as the UK.

But now her tastes have widened and she loves Christina Aguilera, Eminem, Missy Elliott, Usher and Madonna.

Debbie says: "She used to model herself on Britney. Now she's saying: `I'm Sasha!' "

The 33-year-old and her partner Graham Leslie, 57, the ex-Huddersfield Town chairman and boss of the Galpharm company, are right behind Sasha in her bid for stardom.

The Netherton couple even took her out of Huddersfield Grammar School two years ago, paying for private tutors - husband and wife team Cormack and Sharon Kelly - so that she could concentrate on singing and performing.

Sasha's already taken two GCSEs in business studies and history and has her fingers crossed for A grades.

"I don't feel isolated," says Sasha, who has two step-siblings, Alex, 18, and Fay, 16. "I have my friends and that's the main thing.

"We go out shopping and eat at restaurants. Other girls can be bitchy sometimes and say things about me and the way I am, but I just ignore it."

Sasha has a manager in London and she's been invited to the likes of major record company BMG for chats about her future.

Sasha first shot to notice at the age of 11, when she came third out of 60,000 entries in a young voice of the year contest.

She appeared on ITV1's Stars In Their Eyes Kids as Britney Spears and performed at the Examiner Community Awards Ceremony last year.

In 2002, viewers of a Disney Channel show voted her in as lead singer of a new band which performed at the London Arena.

The family have shied away from sending Sasha to stage school or for formal singing lessons - industry insiders advised against it, worried that such training would quell her natural style.

Sasha's success so far has been down to her own drive and commitment.

Her plan is to record an album and work on her fledgling songwriting skills. "I can play the piano a bit," she says. "And I write lyrics and poems all the time."

Debbie is not a stereotypical "pushy mum" and gets annoyed when people assume she must be.

"We just support her and ferry her round," she says.

Now Sasha is focusing on her biggest appearance yet in front of thousands of pop fans at the McAlpine.

She'll be first to perform - before Darius, Phixx, Girls Aloud and Blue.

Sasha plans to sing Queen's We Will Rock You and two or three other songs.

"I've got a month to tone up, and a lot of shopping to do to choose the right outfit," she says.

Sasha says she spends about £100 a month on clothes and make-up, buying things at the likes of Topshop as well as the odd designer purchase.

She also likes to pick up clothes at second-hand stores and customise them.

"She's always put her own outfits together, since she was about four," says Debbie.

Sasha's now dyed her blonde hair brown and sometimes - as in our pictures - sports a look that's more Avril Lavigne than Britney.

But it's still a very sexy image for a 14-year-old.

"Sasha is 14 going on 24," says Debbie. "People can't believe she's so young but I know, I was there at the birth!

"She's such a strong character. But if she tries to wear something that's too revealing, that shows too much cleavage, I'll draw the line and tell her to get changed."

* Tickets for the McAlpine concert on Saturday, July 31, are available from www.blueintown.co.uk or by calling 01484 541199.
