For the second year, a Salinas youth will audition for Fox network's hit reality TV show "American Idol."

The local hopeful is Jessica Read of Salinas. The 16-year-old won the South County YMCA's Y Be an Idol competition July 10 after belting out her rendition of Marvin Gaye's R&B classic "Lets Get It On" and Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful." Her prize is a three-song recording demo and an all-expenses paid trip to Los Angeles for the audition.

The only catch: The audition isn't in L.A.

"We just found out it's actually in San Francisco, but they're still going to pay for everything," said Michael Read, Jessica's father. Read, who will accompany his daughter to the Oct. 4 audition, said they'll drive instead of flying.

Jessica Read beat out seven other "American Idol" hopefuls in the competition, held in Soledad and hosted by the South County YMCA.

"She's been singing since words could come out of her mouth," said Read's mother, Jeannine Woerz, from her home in Park Ridge, Ill. "This is her dream, and we're very proud of her."

"I've always wanted to do this," Jessica said Thursday of her singing career. "I can't imagine my life without music."

Or her wall without Aguilera. According to Jessica's 10-year-old sister, Samantha, Jessica has 146 pictures of the young chanteuse taped to her wall.

Jessica competed on July 15 at Planet Gemini in Monterey as one of four finalists in the Central Coast Idol contest hosted by KDON, a Clear Channel-owned radio station.

However, she lost out to Victoria 'Victory' Elliott, a correctional officer at Soledad Correctional Training Facility who was famously dragged out of the "American Idol" auditions in San Francisco last year after being rejected by the celebrity judges.

Last September, Salinas siblings Monica and Daniel Garcia auditioned for "American Idol" in Pasadena.

Monica, 21, advanced to the third round before being cut.
