The one-time "Genie in a Bottle" was belting out bubblegum pop hits when the world first sat up and took notice. Blonde, sweet and blue-eyed, she was soon caught up in a media-fueled rivalry between fellow ex-mousketeer Britney Spears. Britney went on to sell more records, but Aguilera went home with a Grammy.
Christina isn't just some technically polished singer capable of complex melismas; this is a girl who's been through some hard knocks in her life. Growing up with an unhappy childhood, Christina took solace in music. Her grandmother introduced a young Aguilera to the legends; Billy Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland and Etta James (who calls Aguilera a friend and "a great little singer"). The old soul in Aguilera connected.
For her latest album Back To Basics, (which sees Christina working with Producer Linda Perry again), she's gone "retro." Besides channeling classic screen goddess Marilyn Monroe for the album cover, the double CD album is full of old school jazzy blues full of big-band swing numbers like the first single "Ain't No Other Man." As Christina herself explains, "The first half of the album is kind of a throwback with elements of jazz, blues and soul music combined with a modern-day twist, like hard-hitting beats."
The sounds might be vintage but they still retain that sassy, spunky, no-holds-barred attitude Aguilera's become so famous for. Back To Basics's club track "Still Dirrty" has Aguilera reassuring her fans she's "still got the nasty in me/ still got that dirty degree/ still got that freak in me."
