 Christina Aguilera, she of the platinum blond tresses and the incomparable voice, brings her tour to Gwinnett Arena Wednesday.
The AJC Gwinnett News spoke with three musicians who collaborated with Aguilera on her Grammy-nominated "Back to Basics" album.
They are percussionist Ramon Yslas, songwriter Kara DioGuardi and arranger/ producer Rob Lewis. Yslas and Lewis are also on tour with Aguilera. Answers were edited for length.
Q:What's your impression of Christina?
Yslas: She is just such a powerful singer and has that huge presence in her voice, which is so solid and so amazing when you hear it, in a rehearsal let alone on a big stage. When you're rehearsing at 8, 9, 10 at night and you're tired and all of the sudden, she comes in and she starts singing, you're like, "Wow, that's the reason I'm here."
Q: What do you remember about recording (Grammy-winning single) "Ain't No Other Man"?
Yslas: The producers had an idea of what they needed and so we just went in there and laid it down, but when I heard it, I remember leaving the session and calling my wife and telling her, "Wait till you hear this song. Amazing. It's nothing like anything that's out there at all."
Q: "Back to Basics" includes elements of hip-hop, old-time blues, jazz and has string musicians and a choir, among other things. Can you describe Christina's breadth of musical knowledge?
Lewis: She studies music as an artist and is well-rounded in her knowledge of jazz, hip-hop, pop, rhythm and blues, etc. I remember when we were working on some arrangements for the tour. She played me 15 CDs of music, just to show me what direction she wanted two songs to sound like. She's very smart.
Q: What do you remember most distinctly about the writing and recording process?
DioGuardi: I'll never forget how many times she did vocals and I was like, "That's so incredible," and she'd be like, "No, that's not right." I was like, "Is she out of her mind?" And she would keep going and keep going and keep going. What she threw away was 100 percent to begin with, but she knew she could do it better. She heard more.
Q. How is she different from other pop singers?
DioGuardi: She has an incredible voice, one of the best, if not the best voice, out there. She knows what she wants and she kind of produces her own vocals. She knows exactly what she wants the record to sound like. She has this very distinct vision.
Q. What do you think about the show?
Yslas: I look at faces when I'm playing. Everybody's like eyes wide open and I'm talking from the moment the lights go down. It's pretty powerful. Use the bathroom before the lights go down, because you don't want to miss anything.
Q: What's something about Christina that fans would be interested to know?
Lewis: Christina is great at throwing parties. She throws the best Valentine's Day parties ever. She decorates, makes her own drink menus and even has an ice cream parlor, and lots and lots of games."
AGUILERA SAMPLER
Born: Dec. 18, 1980, in Staten Island, N.Y., to Fausto Aguilera, an Ecuadorian-born sergeant in the U.S. Army, and Shelly Aguilera, an Irish-American musician. Her family lives in Texas, New Jersey and Japan. She has a younger sister.
1987: Her parents divorce and she and her mother and sister move in with her grandmother in the Pittsburgh suburb of Wexford. She starts performing at local talent shows and parties.
1989: Appears on "Star Search."
1990: Auditions for the Disney Channel's "The New Mickey Mouse Club" but is told to come back when she's older.
1992: Sings the national anthem before a playoff game in Pittsburgh between the Braves and Pirates.
1993: Joins the cast of "The New Mickey Mouse Club." Stays for two seasons. Shares the stage with Ryan Gosling, Keri Russell, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and J.C. Chasez.
1995-1997: International tours include Japan, where she releases a single with Keizo Nakanishi called "All I Wanna Do."
1998: Sings "Reflection" for the Disney movie "Mulan." This leads to a seven-album contract with RCA Records.
1999: Releases her self-titled debut album.
2000: Releases "Mi Reflejo," a Spanish-language version of her multimillion-selling debut. Performs at Super Bowl XXXIV in Atlanta halftime show with Enrique Iglesias. Earns her first Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
2001: Joins Pink, Mya and Lil' Kim on the "Lady Marmalade" single and video.
2002: Releases second album, "Stripped." Seals her status as a superstar and transforms her squeaky-clean image into a sultry songstress.
2004: Named a spokeswoman for the M.A.C AIDS Fund, the charitable arm of M.A.C, a cosmetics company. The fund provides vital support to men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS.
2005: Accidentally cuts her arm at home and is forced to wear a cast and sling. Weds music executive Jordan Bratman. In lieu of gifts, the couple request donations be made to hurricane organizations helping the residents of New Orleans after Katrina.
2006: Releases "Back to Basics," a two-CD set.
2007: Forbes magazine names her the 19th-richest woman in entertainment, with a net worth of $60 million. Currently on her 41-city North American "Back to Basics" tour. |
