At Sunday night's Golden Globe awards, it was a ubiquitous accessory: a red and yellow "Remember Haiti" ribbon.
With that annual party out of the way, Hollywood now appears ready to ramp its own aid mission.
Monday night, Larry King was to host a two-hour CNN special called Haiti: How You Can Help. Scheduled guests ran the gamut from politics (Jordan's Queen Raina, former U.S. secretary of state Colin Powell) to sports (basketballers Kobe Bryant and Charles Barkley) to film (Scarlett Johansson, Susan Sarandon, Ben Stiller). Two dozen celebrities were to appear.
King's guest list will be topped on Friday, when a telethon organized by cinema's ultimate A-lister, George Clooney, is scheduled to air on a variety of networks, including CTV, MuchMusic and MTV in Canada. That show will be co-hosted by Clooney and Haitian-born hip-hop star Wyclef Jean. Clooney promises at least 40 stars, including Bono, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Alicia Keys.
Jean's charity Yele Haiti has been top of mind since he launched a Twitter campaign, urging fans to donate $5 via text message. Yele Haiti came under fire from experts who vet charities, citing accounting discrepancies and an intertwining with Jean's own businesses. The musician blasted back in a video blog. |
