Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera and Poison singer Bret Michaels took to the stage for the American Idol grand finale last night.

The two-hour spectacular which saw 24-year old Lee DeWyze crowned this season's winner also had performances from pervious victors Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and last year's champ Kris Allen.

Rocker Alice Cooper kicked off the final, joined by the Idol finalists dressed in school uniforms as he performed his rock anthem, Schools Out.

Rock Of Love star Michaels made a heroic return to the stage after suffering a life-threatening brain haemorrhage last month as he joined Idol finalist Casey James to sing the Poison hit, Every Rose Has It's Thorn.

Aguilera, who is set to perform at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards opted not to sing her debut single Not Myself Tonight, but sang a soulful version of new track You Lost Me from her forthcoming Bionic album.

The Dirrty singer also took to the stage with the season's female contestants, including runner up Crystal Bowersox to sing a medley of her hits Beautiful and Fighter.

Michael Jackson's little sister Janet unveiled her new cropped hair style and joined the Idol party to perform her 1993 hit Again and her new single Nothing.

The 44-year old then briefly left the stage and was joined by a hoard of male dancers as Janet herself sexed up her look in a skintight catsuit to perform a gritty version of Nasty from her third studio album Control.

After crowning Dewyze as Seasons 9's winner, Idol said it's farewells to judge Simon Cowell with an emotional tribute featuring some of the music mogul's best bits as well as performances from contestants past and present.
