Though Christina Aguilera seemed to pop out of nowhere when she topped the U.S. singles chart this year with "Genie in a Bottle," the singer has been active in show business since she was a child.

Christina Marie Aguilera was born Dec. 18, 1980, in Staten Island, N.Y. Her father was in the military and her mother was a violinist and pianist who toured Europe with the Youth Symphony Orchestra. Christina traveled the world with her parents and lived in Japan, Florida, Texas and New Jersey before settling in Wexford, Pa., a suburb of Pittsburgh.

She performed in school talent shows and appeared on the syndicated television show "Star Search" when she was 8.

Two years later Aguilera sang the national anthem for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins. When she was 12 she became a regular on the "New Mickey Mouse Club," along with other future stars Britney Spears, Keri Russell of the television show "Felicity" and members of boy-band 'N Sync.

Aguilera then went to Japan to record a duet, "All I Wanna Do," with Japanese pop star Keizo Nakanishi and to tour there.

In 1998 Aguilera returned to the U.S. and recorded "Reflection" for the soundtrack to Disney's animated film "Mulan." The track became a hit on adult-contemporary radio.

Aguilera was signed by RCA Records and issued her eponymous debut in August. The LP debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart thanks to the #1 pop hit "Genie in a Bottle" (RealAudio excerpt). Other cuts included the gospel-like "So Emotional" (RealAudio excerpt) and the ballad "I Turn to You." The album includes contributions from such songwriting veterans as Diane Warren and Matthew Wilder.

Aguilera also contributed "We're a Miracle" to the soundtrack of the recent "Pokémon" movie, which is based on the hit children's TV show.

This week Aguilera issued a full-length home video titled "Genie Gets Her Wish." The video includes interviews with her from backstage, in the studio and on the road. It also features Aguilera's rendition of Mel Torme's Yuletide classic "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)."

"I'm a really different person ... from [who] I seem to be publicly," Aguilera told the MTV Radio Network. "I'm very, very introverted."

Beginning in January, Aguilera will open for soul-pop trio TLC. The first scheduled date is Jan. 7 in Anaheim, Calif.

Aguilera's latest single is "What a Girl Wants." It features a video, already an MTV favorite, choreographed by Tina Landon, an MTV Video Music Award winner who has worked with such artists as Ricky Martin and Janet Jackson. The video was directed by Diane Martel, who also directed the clip for "Genie in a Bottle."

Other birthdays on Saturday: Sam Andrew (Big Brother and the Holding Company), 58; Keith Richards (Rolling Stones), 56; Elliot Easton (Cars), 46; Bobby Keyes, 46; Geordie (Killing Joke), 41; Greg D'Angelo (White Lion), 36; DJ Lethal (House of Pain), 27; and Chas Chandler (Animals), 1938–1996.
