Saturday's (August 9) show at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall starring Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera was abruptly canceled Saturday afternoon when an accident occurred while the crews were setting up inside the venue.
Apparently, just after noon, the gigantic steel lighting rig that was being raised came crashing down as about 30 crew members ran for safety. However, authorities say three crew members were injured and were taken to the nearby Atlantic City Medical Center for treatment of cuts and bruises.
Federal, state and local officials were immediately summoned to start an investigation to see what caused the accident at the venue--which was just recently refurbished. Officials immediately locked down the building after the crash and announced that Saturday's sold-out show was being postponed.
The website pressofAtlanticcity.com spoke with several crew members, who asked not to be identified. They said they were inside at the time of the crash and speculated that the remainder of the tour would have to be postponed or canceled because of the extent of the damage to the multimillion-dollar equipment, which included stage set pieces, giant video screens, lighting and speakers.
Tour officials did not make a formal announcement about the fate of the tour, though Monday's (August 11) show at the Pepsi Arena in Albany, New York has also been postponed.
Aguilera and Timberlake, who were not in the building at the time of the collapse, have not released statements about the incident.
The tour was among the biggest and most elaborately produced of the summer concert season. A crewmember reported that more than 20 trucks were needed to haul the sets and other equipment from venue to venue. The tour had played in more than 30 cities and was scheduled to wrap up in the U.S. on August 24. |
