TVyNovelas “Exclusive” InterviewFeb 2003

Without fear what they would say, Christina Aguilera, the American singer, daughter of an Ecuadorian father and Irish mother, talked to us, in exclusive with TVyNovelas, about her love-life, her clothes style, her artistic evolution and new album Stripped.

TV: What do you wish for your life in 2003?
CA: I’m a person that likes to live life day by day, but this year I hope to fulfill the expectations of the public and I hope for. But, the most important thing is that it will be a happy year.

TV: Do you have a special desire for those around you?
CA: There are a lot of stuff that I would like to change and I have tried to get involve in, for example: participating in charity foundations that support women that live in violent situations, and give them a home or whatever they need to get away from the problem. I think getting informed about this type of situations won’t end them but make a difference.

TV: What is the difference between the Christina of 6 years ago and the one of today?
CA: When I was 17 my first album came out. For a long time I tried to reach my dream, but it wasn’t until that age that I finally reached it. I was very happy, curious, and open to learn everything, that I was ingenious and I believed everything without questioning it. Now I feel smarter, stronger; I enjoy what I do and I’m surprise what happens to me. Also I know more about the music business and I make decisions. I have even learned to ignore some problems. I’m 23 years old, and even though I’m a young a woman, I have lived through so many things that have made strong and sure of how I want to live my life.

TV: So you even decide on your style?
CA: Yes, I choose everything I do. It’s funny; just before my new videos , people saw the one with the song Lady Marmalade and comments like, “Oh my god, she’s showing alot!”, but maybe this people haven’t seen my process and want to remember me as the girl of Genie In A Bottle, and a few years have gone by, I have grown up. Anyway, that’s how I am. I’m always looking to evolve my style, something to do with what I’m singing, that it reflects my feelings and my emotions. I think it’s important to stay in touch with your sexuality, especially if you are young, but maintaining the control, like when you are in a relationship with a boy. You feel comfortable with your body and you can show the world that girls can be as sexual as guys have been all this years.

TV: Talking about guys, do you have a boyfriend?
CA: No, actually I’m very busy and for right now music is my only love. I won’t deny that once in a while I go out with someone, but I don’t feel in love.

TV: What makes you fall in love with a guy?
CA: Honesty, individuality. I think because of my position I need a guy that is sure of himself, that supports me even though he is not with me all time.

TV: Do you do any other artistic expression, other than music?
CA: Yes, I like to write and even paint sometimes, but I only do it to express my own feelings and things. But the one that’s a talented painter is my sister, Rachel, she’s really good, she’s 16 years old, I feel very proud of her.

TV: What does your family think of your fame?
CA: My family is the best! My mother supports in everything that I do. People criticize you a lot in this business for what you wear, say, the music you do, but when the video for Dirrty came out, she told me that she agreed with the image I was trying to project in it.

TV: Does your age have anything to do with the success?
CA: Singing is the dream that I have always had, and for what I have fought for all my life; for me, this is not a hobby, is a very serious profession, I’m not going to give up until I have achieved all my goals, I want to continue with this all my life.

TV: What do you recommend to all those girls who are working on their dreams?
CA: To keep going without caring what others have to say, not even the negativity around them, if they feel that they really want something, they have to try everything even if it kills them to achieve it.

TV: If you weren’t an artist, what would you be?
CA: I don’t imagine doing anything that doesn’t have to do with music, my genes are like that, I breath and life for the music.

TV: What do you think of Latinos?
CA: I feel very proud of singing in Spanish, it’s a beautiful language, my dad taught me when I was a little girl about traditions like the union of a family and the principle morals that I take in my heart.

TV: What differs “Stripped” from all of your early producitons?
CA: There’s a big difference. This album is me, my baby, I worked in all it’s process, from it’s production to it’s lyrics. In my earlier albums I followed recommendations and style that they set on me, and now I did it to my taste, I have more experience. I went back through my life history, things that I hadn’t understand, my problems and of the world, including breaking up with my first love. Then I had to organize everything. Now the album is finished and I have nothing else but to feel thankful and happy with what I have lived through.
