Britney Still Rides the VMA WaveType: Internet Article

Britney Still Rides the VMA WaveSep 09, 2003

It is now two weeks later, and searches for the Britney Spears-Madonna kiss from the MTV Video Music Awards see no sign of dropping off the pop culture radar. Put that together with Britney's appearance on Thursday's NFL kickoff show and she is back for a second week at #1.

This is the first time since August 2000 that Britney has spent two straight weeks on top of the Lycos 50. Make-out partner Madonna is up to #5, her highest rank in history. That other girl from the on-stage menage a trois, Christina Aguilera, moves up to #12 and is one week away from making it into our Lycos 50 Elite with 50 straight weeks on the list. Oh, and searches for the VMAs are still at #13.

Although the kiss is still driving tons of Internet searches, it seems to have pushed Britney's topless shoot from Elle Magazine's U.K. edition out of the public mindset. Elle drops out of the Lycos 50 this week.

CYCLE-OLOGY: Two of the motorcycle searches we wrote about last week for Wednesday's Daily Trend article stayed hot enough to make the Lycos 50: Harley Davidson and Orange County Choppers. Harley queries were high because of a huge convention in Milwaukee that ended the company's year-long centennial celebration. Orange County Choppers got tons of searches when Discovery Channel spent all Labor Day running motorcycle programs, including OCC's American Chopper.

LOOK OUT HOLLYWOOD: A month ago, we wrote about horror film Underworld (#42) as One to Watch. Now it looks like Underworld could be a sleeper hit of Fast and Furious proportions. The Romeo-and-Juliet-meets-werewolves-and-vampires picture makes the Lycos 50 two weeks before hitting theatres. Before now, the only movies to show up on our list that early have been colossal blockbusters with years of hype like The Matrix: Reloaded and Lord of the Rings (#16). As an added bonus, searches for Underworld lead actress Kate Beckinsale have doubled over the past two weeks.

SHORT SUBJECTS: The first full week of the Internet's most popular sport means huge jumps for both the NFL (#3) and college football (#18), with fantasy football (#9) searches dropping slightly... Apollo 11 (#49) is on the Lycos 50 because of interest in a new DVD documentary released three weeks ago... Hot new video game Soul Calibur 2 almost makes the Lycos 50... It may be the attention suddenly paid to new competitors, but otherwise we have no idea what the reason might be for Viagra (#34) searches to rise by 50 percent this week, putting the drug on the Lycos 50 for the first time since late 2001... Moving away from Earth, Mars tumbles to #39.

NEW THIS WEEK: Harley Davidson, Viagra, Orange County Choppers, Underworld, September 11, Apollo 11, West Nile Virus.

DROPOUTS: Angelina Jolie, Neopets, NASA, Star Wars Kid, Big Brother 4, British Elle Magazine, Freddy vs. Jason.

ONE YEAR AGO: The anniversary of September 11 ranked #5, with the World Trade Center at #10, as America prepared to mark the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 2001. This year, with the two-year anniversary coming up, September 11 is only #48, with World Trade Center nowhere near the Lycos 50. On Thursday, we'll look back at how the attacks changed the way people use the Internet.

TOMORROW: It might be... it could be... it is! Another news quiz.
