Auditions took place last week for the upcoming Treasure Coast Juniors competition, a sort of "American Idol" for talented local youngsters.
Kids auditioned in two groups, ages 5-11 and 12-18. Karen Wiggins, co-owner of Alpha and Omega Music and Studios, was one of the judges.
"It went very, very well," Wiggins says. "We had only four no-shows out of about 45 kids who registered.
"And quite a few of them came from, literally, all over the Treasure Coast. There were a lot from Port St. Lucie, a couple from Jensen Beach, one from Okeechobee. And one came down from Melbourne."
There were three categories in the contest: Vocal, instrumental and dance.
"Quite a few were vocal, in the 12-14 age range," says Wiggins. "And a couple of them already have recording contracts. But it was a hard decision, because they were all quite talented. That made it difficult for us."
The most popular numbers, Wiggins says, chuckling, seemed to be Christina Aguilera and Madonna songs.
A total of 30 kids -- including 26 from the Alpha and Omega auditions and four from separate auditions at the 14th Avenue Dance Studio, will go up against a panel of judges Oct. 24 at the Downtown Friday Oktoberfest, sponsored by Main Street Vero Beach.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. on the south stage, located on 14th Avenue between 20th and 21st streets.
There will be winners in each age group, plus an overall favorite. Prizes include a $50 savings bond from Indian River National Bank and a trophy from TeeJay's Awards.
"I was impressed with the overall talent of the kids on the Treasure Coast," adds Wiggins. "Quite a few, we'd ask, 'Are you involved in theater?' and the majority of them said no. "Well, do you sing in chorus?' 'No.'"
There were a few surprises, as well.
"One guy came in, he was 15 years old and he wasn't sure what his mother had gotten him into. He goes 'What am I doing this for?'
"But he did very well. He was one of the winners."
(SUBHEAD) Fall festival info needed
Next Friday's Arts Alive! Lifestyle will feature our annual roundup of fall festivals -- art shows, Halloween events, anything that takes place outdoors and invites a lot of people!
We want to be sure we include everybody, so if you or your organization is sponsoring a fall festival, anywhere on the Treasure Coast, please give me a call, an e-mail or a fax as soon as possible. Thanks. |
