Grown-up Christina has fans in frenzyOct 29, 2003

CHRISTINA Aguilera was crowned the new queen of pop at the SECC last night as she writhed her way through a funky, raunchy set in front of a screaming teen crowd.

The overwhelmingly female audience, who shared the 22-year-old's sassy attitude, were treated to a thundering intro and a massive shower of fireworks introducing their heroine as she came on stage and launched into chart-topping hit Dirrty.

A black-clad Aguilera stomped her way through the scaffolding stage set, flanked by eight dancers and a backing band.

Frequently skipping off-stage to reappear in a new outfit, one of the most daring was the black leather chaps she appeared in when strapped to a glittering giant X-shaped cross, which was wheeled out on stage as she launched into Genie In A Bottle.

The gig, which sold out weeks in advance, saw Aguilera in reflective mood as she introduced A Voice Within, telling her fans: "I'm 22 years old now. I want to thank those of you who have grown up with me over the years.

"It's such a blessing this time around to do my own damn material!"

Aguilera, who returns to Scotland to host the MTV Europe Music Awards next week, took a breather to play a handful of ballads, including a cover of Etta James' At Last, which she performed with raven-black hair scraped back in a classy red dress.

But it was the barrage of hits rather than the vocal acrobatics or the new generation of girl power sentiments that sent the crowd into a frenzy, with What A Girl Wants a highlight.

After a ticker-tape blizzard engulfed the audience, the set closed with an encore of Beautiful, with Aguilera returning to the stage in a white T-shirt with the slogan "God sees no color" on it, to belt out her number one hit.

•Christina is backing the Scottish Executive's campaign against domestic abuse, it was revealed today.

She has donated artwork featuring the lyrics to her song I'm OK for an exhibition next year highlighting the devastating effects of abuse.

The star grew up with a violent father and has frequently spoken out about the effect it had on her.
