Aguilera's "Fighter" Inspires | Type: Internet Article |
| | Nurul's a real fighter | Dec 01, 2003 | by S.S. Dhaliwal
“Cause it makes me that much stronger Makes me work a little bit harder It makes me that much wiser So thanks for making me a fighter Made me learn a little bit faster Made my skin a little bit thicker It makes me that much smarter So thanks for making me a fighter”
AND so goes the chorus of Christina Aguilera’s song Fighter that inspires gymnast Nurul Fatiha Abdul Hamid each time she steps into the arena.
The 17-year-old has gone through it all, losing her father at a young age and more recently, defying the odds by making it to the final squad of the Vietnam SEA Games despite being hampered by an injury during the selection trials.
And she is hoping that her fighting qualities will get her through the battle at Hanoi as she strives to deliver a gold.
Nurul was the darling of the 2001 Kuala Lumpur Games when she bagged three gold medals.
However, she admitted repeating that feat would not be easy and instead set a modest target of winning the parallel bar.
“It is going to be tough to win all three golds again as I will not only have to compete against gymnasts from other countries but my teammates are equally capable of winning the gold.
“It has been tough preparing for both my SPM examinations and the SEA Games but I am motivated to do well,” said Nurul.
“Although I won three gold medals in KL two years ago I yearn for more success and this has been my motivating factor.”
But Nurul knows that she would not have turned out to be a top notch gymnast had it not been for the love and sacrifice of her parents.
The man behind her success is her father Abdul Hamid, who died from kidney failure in 1997 when she was 11.
But the persistence of her mother Shabani Hashim drove Nurul on and the Kedah-born lass went on to bag three golds two years ago.
“I always think of my father. I am what I am today thanks to the untiring efforts of my parents,” said Nurul.
“Mum goes out of her way to give me the support I need and is always there to lend me a shoulder to lean on.
“I hope to repay her faith by churning out another inspiring performance in Hanoi.”
Nurul, an Aries, looks up to fellow gymnast, Au Li Yen as her idol, and aspires to be a sports journalist.
This explains her curious nature for she is always inquisitive about her surroundings and happenings.
Having just completed her SPM examinations, Nurul hopes to continue her studies at the Bukit Jalil Sports School via the pre-university programme offered by Universiti Putra Malaysia. |
