Summary:

"When she was younger, she did want to meet Christina Aguilera and Eminem," said Kristal Donley, Dijos' sister. And, even now, going on a shopping spree was Dijos' second choice.

NEWARK -- Stepping out of the limousine, Nicole Dijos squealed with delight at seeing her name on a welcome sign at the entrance to NewPark Mall. Dressed in sweats and comfortable walking shoes, the Fremont teenager was ready to do some major shopping.

Dijos, who suffers from end-stage renal disease, or kidney failure, went on a $4,000-plus shopping spree at Bay Area malls Saturday. The shopping spree was made possible by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an international nonprofit organization that helps fulfill the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses.

Shoes, jerseys, boxing gloves, paintball guns, a stereo and a cell phone were among the items on the 17-year-old's shopping list.

Dijos' day began when a limousine driver arrived at her house to whisk her and her two sisters to NewPark Mall, where she walked straight to a Macy's cosmetics counter to be made over.

Then it was on to "Unlimited Clothing,"

where Dijos had several outfits waiting for her. Aware that she had only a few hours at NewPark Mall before heading to Southland Mall in Hayward, Dijos had scoped out stores with her father ahead of time and put items on hold.

"It kind of makes sense -- when you think of a teenage girl. What does she want to do? Shop," said Carrie Denniston, mall spokeswoman.

But shopping had not always been on Dijos' mind.

"When she was younger, she did want to meet Christina Aguilera and Eminem," said Kristal Donley, Dijos' sister. And, even now, going on a shopping spree was Dijos' second choice.

"I wanted a car, but (Make-A-Wish) wouldn't let me get a car," said Dijos, who hopes to obtain her driver's license when she turns 18.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation honors most requests, except when a child asks for $1 million, a trip to the moon or a car, said Tom Gonzales, a volunteer for the organization.

Wishes that have been granted include trips to Disney World and foreign countries and meetings with celebrities, he said.

Though shopping had been Dijos' second choice initially, that was no longer the case by the end of Saturday, she said.

"It was fun," she said. "I was in the spotlight. Everyone was really nice."
