KYLIE Minogue has picked up her first Grammy award, collecting the gong for Best Dance Song at today's ceremony in Los Angeles.

The diminutive princess of pop beat off competition from Cher, Madonna, Groove Armada and Telepopmus for her hit Come Into My World. ( Grammy nominees and winners list.)

The Grammy represents arguably Kylie's most prestigious award to date and was her only nomination at this year's awards. While Kylie did arrive on the "green" carpet wearing an off the shoulder toga dress, she was barely visible throughout the ceremony.

Kylie has attended other awards ceremonies, not least the Brits, whre she has been a multiple award winner. She has also cleaned up her fair share of ARIAs in Australia over a glittering career that is now 0 at least in terms of awards - complete.

The victory is a timely one for Kylie, who just recently announced her intention to blitz the US charts with the sound she has already made a storming success in Australia, the UK and across Europe.

Taking an award at such a high profile event in front of a US audience of millions and all thr right industry people inside the Staples Centre will only help her campaign.

The most prestigious award of the night - Record Of The Year - went to British band Coldplay for their piano-driven hit Clocks.

Lead singer Chris Martin, who is expecting his first child with wife Gwyneth Paltrow, said thanks in the only way he knows how, cheekily getting politics into his acceptance speech by saying he hoped John Kerry would win the US presidential election in November. The evenings multiple winner was Beyonce Knowles, who collected a total of five Grammys from her six nominations.

The 22-year soul queen won for Best Contemporary R and B Album for Dangerously In Love, one of the first awards of the main Grammy's show.

She also opened the evening in a hot pink thigh-high gown alongside Prince and singing alongside him through a collection of his hits and her own Crazy In Love, won two awards.

OutKast, also nominated for a leading six Grammys, won two awards an hour into the broadcast: Best Urban/Alternative Performance for Hey Ya! and Best Rap Album for Speakerboxxx-The Love Below.

They gave a rousing rendition of Hey Ya! at the end of the show, and followed it by walking off with the coveted Album of the Year award for Speakerboxxx.

Another winner was Justin Timberlake, who took out the Best Male Pop Vocal award for Cry Me A River after a week of controversy over his antics with Janet Jackson at the Super Bowl .

While Jackson did not show up, despite being re-invited to the ceremony, Timberlake took the opportunity to apologise - again - for the biggest "rip-off" of the 21st Century.

"I know it's been a rough week on everybody," he said.

"What occurred was unintentional, completely regrettable, and I apologise if anyone was offended. This is officially the greatest moment of my life."

CBS, who telecast the Grammys and the Super Bowl, took the precaution of delaying their coveage by five minutes so as to avert any further flashing disasters.

Christina Aguilera's dress sneaked by the censors, however, with a neckline that plunged deeper than a Texas oil drill when she wiggled up to accept her Best Female Pop Vocal Grammy for Beautiful.

The late country music legend Johnny Cash, and director Mark Romanek, won for best short form music video for the haunting song Hurt.

Bill Clinton also grabbed an award, although not for his saxaphone skills. The former US President teamed up with former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and screen legend Sophia Loren to win Best Spoken Word Album for Children for their reading on Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf/Beintus: Wolf Tracks.
