What do you get when you put four pop and hip-hop divas together in a recording studio? If your answer is flying fur and scratched egos, in the case of Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Pink and Mya, you couldn't be more wrong.
"We were all in the studio together, and we got along — no cat-fighting," Mya said of the foursome's re-recording of '70s girl group LaBelle's "Lady Marmalade." "It's a great thing — females getting along for a change." With Missy Elliott and Rockwilder producing, the quartet remade LaBelle's disco classic about a Creole courtesan for the "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack, due April 24 (see "Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Pink, Mya Make 'Marmalade'"). Their rendition will serve as the soundtrack's lead single. "It's hot," Mya said.
The original "Lady Marmalade" hit #1 in 1975.
Mya, who made a cameo in 1999's "In Too Deep" with Omar Epps, said she is auditioning for film roles but did not disclose any specifics. The singer is also involved with a program called "Secret to Self-Esteem" that will take her to high schools every month to speak on various issues facing teenage girls. The program is sponsored by Secret antiperspirant in partnership with Columbia University.
"As teenagers, we go through social, emotional and physical changes ... and sometimes to feel comfortable, we end up doing things that are not true to who we are, just to fit in and feel loved," Mya, 21, said.
The Washington, D.C., native also has plenty of concert touring on tap for 2001, including a headlining run at House of Blues venues, beginning March 21 in Los Angeles. |
