AVRIL LAVIGNE knows she has little time left before her teen angst attitude won't ring true with her fans.

But the 19-year-old Sk8er Boi singer is determined she won't follow Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera by stripping off and indulging in raunchy dance routines to sell records.

Despite claims that she is willing to square up to her American rivals, Canadian star Avril says she has nothing against the former Mouseketeers and nothing in common with them either.

While her latest album shows her maturing both musically and lyrically as she grows from a teen anti-hero into womanhood, Avril insists: ``I have never really tried to fill any gap or try to be somebody I am not.

``I am just myself and I would never let a record company tell me how to dress or how to act. I have been myself from day one.

``Christina Aguilera and Britney do not bother me, I have no opinion on them. I have never even met them so how can I be expected to comment on what they do?

``People try to get you to say things that will cause trouble all the time, but I know better.

``I just need to look after myself and everything will be cool. I am not going to start making comments that will start fights.''

Already, one of the biggest female pop stars in the world, Avril admits success has changed her life and that it is being reflected in the songs she has compiled for her latest album, Under My Skin.

Released on May 24, it features her new single Don't Tell Me, which is set to chart on Sunday.

So has her life changed dramatically since first shooting to fame two years ago with Complicated?

She said: ``Yes, life is getting a little crazy but I wouldn't change it for the world. I really do have to cut down on my drinking. I have decided to cut down a bit. It catches up with you after a while.''

Although Avril's fame appears to have come overnight, she slogged her way around Canada as a child, playing to 20,000 fans in a stadium when she was only 14.

At 16, she came to the attention of one of the biggest movers in the music industry, Antonio `LA' Reid, who signed her up in a multi-million dollar deal.

Such powerful backing was enough to give Avril the confidence that stardom would soon becoming her way.

She said: ``I have always known I was going to be a star, I knew this was my destiny so things have fallen into place.

``There is alot of money involved, but I know I am lucky. I have not always had money, I have had to fight hard to make it where I am today. Some people try to put me down but I can take that. It makes me stronger.''

While the music chiefs may have been instrumental in developing Avril's career to this point, she was determined to have more say with the latest album UnderMy Skin.

She said: ``I had to really make my feelings clear with the producers. This time around I knew what I wanted in the studio and I had a lot more confidence.

``It can be quite daunting when you are with incredibly talented writers and producers, but I am learning to express myself better.

``It is important to make clear what you ultimately want to hear when the album is finished regrets are too late afterwards. Now I am really proud of the finished product.

``I'm just pouring my heart out into these songs and writing and creating music that I love and that I'm happy with and putting it onto a record and presenting that back to my fans saying `Here's what I've done. Here's how I've grown'. If they like it, then super. Great.

``My singles are pop songs, but the rest of the record is just, like, dark. It's my type of music. When I've been writing lately it's just been dark stuff, kind of. I play piano, so I've got, like, dark piano stuff going on. And I like a lot of guitars and just a heavy sound. A lot of my record is like that.

``But, you know, I was careful to make sure I had some fun, uplifting songs as well, because on the last record I had a lot of that kind of stuff and I didn't want to just come around with a completely different record.

``My fans loved my last record, so I wanted to put back some of those elements into it.

``I'm a young girl, so a lot of the time the girls totally understand what I'm talking about, and I think that's great.

``That's probably why a lot of people like my music and especially young girls.

``I get letters from girls all the time, just saying `Oh my God, I totally know what you're talking about, and your music helped me'.

``And that's really cool for me to feel, to talk about what I go through and let other people know that's normal and to be strong.

``A lot of my stuff is about being strong and not taking c*** from people.''

The first single release from the album also signifies a more mature approach from the teenager.

AVRIL added: ``The lyrics in this song were really important to me. It is about a girl pressured by her boyfriend to do things she doesn't want to do. It has a goodmessage for young girls, a lot of my fans will be able to relate to it.''

The video is also powerful. Avril is featured in her underwear in a hotel room.

But rather than going down the route taken somanytimesbyfemaleAmericanpop stars such as writhing around on a bed in anticipation of some mythical hunk walking through the door Avril smashes a mirror in anger in the promo.

``It is only natural to progress. The best music has power and videos should reflect this,'' she says coolly. ``I have changed a lot in those last two years.''

Avril has been enjoying nights in with shock rocker Marilyn Manson, but insists their get togethers are perfectly innocent.

She said: ``When we're in the same city we get together and he's so cool. One time, we hung out in his room and watched movies. I went to his show a couple of times and we hung out on the tour bus after.

``When we're together it's really cool because we just sit there and totally talk. It's so healthy when I can sit down and talk to another artist who's doing what I'm doing.''

But Avril denies Marilyn's claims that she has a secret crush on him.

She said: ``That is so funny. We've been hanging out, but I don't have a crush on him.''

Despite being linked at times to Sum 41's Deryck Whybley and Justin Timberlake, Avril denies there is any man in her life right now.

She said: ``Look, I am single. I am not seeing anyone, I have no boyfriend, nobody, I am very single, ok?

``As for Justin Timberlake, oh no, there is no truth in that.

``People write bad things about Justin, but I have nothing bad to say.

``We are in the spotlight but we should be allowed to have a private life.''
