FRANKLIN -- This town will be celebrating America’s birthday with the old-fashioned, four-day party, complete with carnival rides, fireworks, and a July 4th parade down Main Street.

The party begins Friday afternoon, with a farmers’ market outside Town Hall from 1 to 6 p.m. After that the action moves to the Town Common, where kids can have fun with carnival games and rides, while adults enjoy the music of the Frank Padula Band, who perform everything from jazz to Top 40, and A Ray of Elvis, a tribute to the man from Memphis.

The Saturday celebration kicks off with road races sponsored by Strata Bank. Kids will run a mile; adults, three miles. Registration is at 9 a.m., and competitors leave the starting gate at 10 a.m.

The Town Common carnival opens at 10 a.m., with music by deejay Bobby Costello, clowns, balloon twisters, and magicians. Local talent takes over the bandstand at 3 p.m., followed by the blues and funk of Random Play and Motown hits performed by the Boston Soul Review.

Fireworks - the booming highlight of every Independence Day weekend -- will be launched from beside the High School, starting at 10 p.m. Oak Street will be closed at 8 p.m. from Echo Bridge to Beaver Street. There will be no parking at Horace Mann School. The pyrotechnics are sponsored by the Alan Bernon family and Garelick Farms.

On Sunday crowds will gather along Main Street for the Fourth of July parade, which starts at 2 p.m. The procession will be led by the Franklin Friends and Alumni Marching Band, a home-grown group of former college and high school musicians who refuse to lay down their tubas and trombones.

Parking for all the weekend events is available at Longley Field on Maple Street, the High School, Dean College, the Davis Thayer School, and St. Mary’s Church. On Saturday and Sunday St. Mary’s parking will be for seniors only. Downtown Main Street will be closed during events. Union Street parking will be for those with disabled stickers only.
