| | LIVE: Kelly Clarkson Moves From R&B Idol To Rock ‘N’ Roll Icon | Apr 18, 2005 | by Brian Wong
Summary:
Her stripped-down, strings-and-acoustic guitar version of her Lavigne-penned "Breakaway" inspired an audience singalong, though it was her super-charged "Miss Independent" that was best received. There was actually punk-rock fist-raising for this song, which was given a huge, metal-riffic alteration from her noisy band who put some much needed meat into this Christina Aguilera-written ode to womankind.

How can anyone hate Kelly Clarkson? The winner of the first American Idol not only possesses a strong voice, but she easily rivals Britney in the "Hey, y'all!" department.
"I love Canada so far!" the Texas-raised Clarkson shouted to her Canadian audience midway through her solid showing at Massey Hall. "Y'all so cool!"
But, Kelly — YOU are so cool. For 70 minutes, the big-voiced diva-turned-Avril-style rocker hardly broke a sweat belting out a mix of songs from her lukewarm debut Thankful and its better, harder-edged follow-up, Breakaway. Sure, she still works the crowds from all sides of the stage, sometimes twirling around and whipping her bouncy newly-blonde curls, but unlike her younger pop-rock siblings Ashlee and Hilary, Clarkson can rely on her excellent vocal range to draw whoops and I-love-yous from her bristol-board-wielding crowd.
Lately, Kelly Clarkson is promoting the Rock Chick thing. And so, decked out in a jeweled midriff-baring black tee, silver-studded belt and a lone fingerless leather glove, Clarkson and her five-piece band began the night with her Ted Leo-approved break-up sleeper, "Since U Been Gone." This soaring, quiet-verse/loud-chorus anthem, along with power ballads like "Because Of You" and minor-key, Evanescence melodramas like "Addicted" proved Clarkson could outlast the bland, R&B diva comparisons and out-emote a Diane Warren tune with these Def Leppard-worthy singalongs. Even the sap-infested Idol winner's single, "A Moment Like This," was given a punk-pop makeover. It would've been wise just to ignore the trite song altogether, but at least we got to see Clarkson lift up the mic stand like a wannabe badass bar rocker.
More confusing was her cover of Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)," which Clarkson proclaimed as being one of her favourite songs. Surprisingly she can growl the line, "Some of them want to abuse you!" as well as Marilyn Manson, but the selection didn't quite fit into her bluesy medley of influences that included Big Brother And The Holding Company's "Piece Of My Heart" and B.B. King's "The Thrill Is Gone."

Good work, y'all. |
