While Christina Aguilera’s stellar voice made her special, it also made her a victim of jealousy and isolation in school. On VH-1’s Driven, Christina’s mom Shelly revealed that her daughter was ridiculed by classmates at her elementary school. Shelly and Christina were even forced to move from their hometown after kids threatened them and slashed their tires. “Anyone who tried to befriend Christina was harassed by phone day and night until their parents said no,” Shelly explains. A childhood friend adds: “I remember one time in gym class they were trying to kick balls at her, to deliberately try to hurt her. It was just a jealousy thing.”

Even after relocating, Christina would face the same struggle to fit in. at her high school prom, schoolmates walked off the dance floor when the DJ played her hit song “Genie in a Bottle.” “People would either welcome me or they would shun me and say, ‘She thinks she’s better than us,’” Christina reveals. “That was totally not true. It was really hard for me because all I wanted to do was be a part of [everything] else and be a normal kid. People get jealous of your successes and it creates other problems,” she explains.

These days, words can’t bring Christina down. “How you feel about yourself is all that matters,” she says. “Not how other people feel about you.”

How to deal: “Try to downplay whatever they’re jealous about when you’re around them,” advises Julie. “Don’t change who you are, but don’t rub their noses in it either. And remember, if they’re jealous, they’re just insecure.”
