Christina Aguilera Interview:

*Like Missy, you experienced your father abusing your mother. Does this make you want to help others, too?

Yes, I’ve ‘adopted’ a woman’s shelter. I’ve just been to visit it – I go see the families myself and try to get involved as I can.

*Are the psychological effects of abuse worse than the physical?

Just like I say in my song [I’m OK], the bruises go away but the emotional scars leave a mark that takes many years – if not a lifetime – to heal. That’s the saddest part about it.

*Stripped is one heartfelt album. How did you escape your teen-pop days to produce this?

I didn’t want to put anything fake, which is why I called the album Stripped – I’m absolutely bearing my soul. That’s the kind of artist I always wanted to be.

*You came close to a breakdown last year. Do you feel stronger now?

Yes, but I have my off days. I’m only human.

*But you don’t let anyone push you around, not even the music industry suits?

I give my mum credit for giving me strength. She’s big into quotes; she always says, ‘The roughest road is the one that often leads to the top.’ Those statements remind me not to follow the pack.

*Even if you get criticized for sexy videos and sartorial slip-ups?

Of course. Trouble is, I am my own product, and being a vulnerable, ‘out-there’ artist involves opening yourself up to criticism.

*So you’re comfortable in your own skin?

Yes. But it’s not an easy place to get to. And some days I just want to crawl back under the bedcovers. I’ve been burnt a lot, I’ve had to learn the hard way about things. But that’s what makes you a stronger person.

*How do you deal with criticism?

I don’t read much of what’s written. Besides, I think there are a lot of people out there who have no taste. Can critics do better? Presumably if they could, they’d be doing it themselves.

*Do you get nervous before you perform?

Oh yeah. Serious butterflies right before I go on stage. My adrenalin really gets going. But when I’m onstage, I can’t think of anywhere else in the world I’d rather be.

*Which three things do you wish were still around?

Marilyn Monroe, The Addams Family TV Series, and Bar None candy bars.
