It seemed like the biggest star trend of the year: Weddings! From DEMI & ASHTON to SANDRA & JESSE and BEN & JENNIFER, 2005 wowed us with some lavish, unexpected and super-secret nuptials...
"The institution of marriage is alive and well in Hollywood," People magazine editor JESS CAGLE tells ET. The magazine is profiling the year's most notable weddings in their year-end "Best & Worst" issue, on newsstands now. "It seemed like everybody was getting married, and all of the weddings were really interesting."
The year got off with a bang with DONALD TRUMP's wedding to MELANIA KNAUSS in Palm Beach, FL, in front of approximately 500 guests, with a lavish reception that took place at the Mar-a-Lago Club in a 17,000-square-foot Crystal Pavilion that the "Apprentice" kingpin built specifically for the occasion. "Because it was a Trump wedding, it was bigger, and it was flashier than all the other weddings," says Cagle. "The wedding gown was over $100,000. The ring was a million dollars and 12 carats. Everything about it was elaborate, and everything about it was fascinating."
In April, reality "Survivors" ROB MARIANO and AMBER BRKICH tied the knot on -- of course -- TV. The lovable pair fell in love amid grueling challenges and scarce food on "Survivor," and they played out their engagement on the small screen as they criss-crossed the globe for "The Amazing Race." The union culminated with "Rob and Amber Get Married," which was taped at the Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island in the Bahamas. And royal watchers were treated to a traditional ceremony with little pomp and circumstance when PRINCE CHARLES wed CAMILLA PARKER BOWLES at Windsor's town hall in England. "The Prince Charles and Camilla wedding was notable primarily because you couldn't help but compare it to the Prince Charles and DIANA wedding," says Cagle. "It was formal, but it was really for family. The princes were there, and the big news about their being there were was they seemed to be giving a big thumbs up -- and they wrote 'Just Married' on their dad's Bentley."
Supermodel HEIDI KLUM and her musician love SEAL tied the knot May 10 in a small private ceremony on the beaches of Mexico. Klum, who was five months pregnant with their first child at the time, wore a gorgeous VERA WANG gown for the nuptials. Then, on June 29, BEN AFFLECK and a pregnant JENNIFER GARNER pulled off the first big "secret" wedding of the year on the beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean. The happy 'Daredevil' co-stars successfully avoided a "Bennifer" media fiasco with a tiny guest list that included Jen's "Alias" co-star VICTOR GARBER, and after the big day they headed to Jen's hometown of Charleston, WV, to celebrate their nuptials with family and friends over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
On July 16, it was a down-home country affair when 'Miss Congeniality' star SANDRA BULLOCK married "Monster Garage" host JESSE JAMES in the town of Gaviota, north of Santa Barbara, CA. In front of 200-300 guests invited to a big "party," the couple surprised many by exchanging vows and then roaring off afterwards in a souped-up red truck!
The couple that bucked the odds by staying together surprised everyone in Hollywood by pulling off the secret ceremony of the year -- right under everyone's noses! It was no "punk" when MTV prankster ASHTON KUTCHER wed DEMI MOORE on Sept. 24 in a Kabbalah-style wedding ceremony in Beverly Hills. "Demi and Ashton was one of the most surprising weddings because, until a couple of days leading up to it, no one saw it coming," says Cagle. "It was really a family affair. Her daughters were there. Her ex-husband BRUCE WILLIS was there. There was a lot of love in the room. Say what you will about celebrity weddings, this one really was a very sincere ceremony."
Food Network maven RACHAEL RAY married her longtime love JOHN CUSIMANO on September 24 in a spectacular ceremony in Montalcino, Italy, and followed it up with a wild African safari -- and plenty of delicious food! Songbird CHRISTINA AGUILERA married producer JORDAN BRATMAN in a sumptuous ceremony in Napa Valley, CA on Nov. 19. And the world watched as twenty-year-old multi-million-dollar heiress ATHINA ONASSIS ROUSSEL married her older boyfriend, ALVARO "DODA" ALFONSO de MIRANDA NETO, in a large ceremony in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Dec. 3.
Taking a cue from his pal Ben, MATT DAMON snuck under the wire and married girlfriend LUCIANA BOZAN on the morning of Dec. 9 in a private ceremony in the New York City Clerk's office with only Luciana's 7-year-old daughter, ALEXA, present. The happy couple, who had been together for nearly two years, also announced that Lucy is pregnant with the pair's first child. The same weekend, a stealthy GARTH BROOKS married his Country girlfriend TRISHA YEARWOOD in a private ceremony in Oklahoma, just six months after Brooks got down on one knee in front of thousands of concert-goers to ask for Trisha's hand.
Other celebrities who tied the knot this year include SHERYL LEE RALPH, ALICIA SILVERSTONE, BO BICE, JENNIFER JASON LEIGH, JASON PRIESTLEY, TIFFANI THIESSEN, WILLEM DAFOE, ALAN THICKE -- and MARILYN MANSON! |
