| | Grammys prove an exciting piece of award season | Feb 20, 2007 | by Saira Khan
Summary:
However, I personally thought the show stealer was Christina Aguilera with her enchanting performance of "It’s a Man's World" by James Brown. At the end of the medley, and to the crowd’s surprise, Smokey Robinson chimed in singing "Tracks of My Tears" and Lionel Richie sang the ever-so-corny-yet-cute "Hello". Christina Aguilera, who has come a long way from her "Genie in a Bottle" days, stole the show.

It’s time to roll out the red carpet! The beginning of a new year is probably the most exciting for all celebrities, because with it comes award season. With the Emmys, Grammys, and Oscars lined up in the span of three short months, celebrities barely have anytime to check into rehab or expose themselves between events. The latest event to take place was on February 11: the Grammys. Shadowed by the death of Anna Nicole Smith and the excitement of Valentine’s Day, not much attention was given to this award ceremony.
This year’s event was filled with lots of surprises, unexpected wins, and reunions. The Police reunited for the Grammys and, to no one's surprise, played their hit Roxanne. Even though the performance was good, it was nothing out of the ordinary. Shakira’s mind blowing performance with Wyclef Jean of "Hips Don’t Lie" upped the pace and got the crowd pumped up again. With wonderful performances by Justin Timberlake, Mary J. Blige, Gnarls Barkley, Beyonce, and the Dixie Chicks, the night seemed to have been full of fun and frolic. I wonder how Britney Spears now feels about her little panty incident.
As far as the winners list was concerned, I was just as surprised as any other. For starters, John Mayer won the title for Best Pop Album. I have nothing against John Mayer, nor am I a big fan of Timberlake, but come on, Justin Timberlake’s album kicked butt compared to John Mayer’s.
And I was quite shocked when the Dixie Chicks walked away with not only Record of the Year but also Song of the Year AND Album of the Year. I think it’s about time I went out and got that album. They won over Justin Timberlake, James Blunt, and Mary J. Blige, to name a few. Carrie Underwood took the Best New Artist award over James Blunt, Imogen Heap, James Brown, and Corinne Bailey Rae. Best Female Pop Performance went to the well-deserved Christina Aguilera for "Ain’t No Other Man" and the male award went to John Mayer for "Waiting on the World to Change". I don’t know about you guys, but doesn’t the beginning of that song remind you of Marvin Gaye’s "Sexual Healing"? The Black Eyed Peas got the Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group and Tony Bennett and Stevie Wonder took the Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals for Once In My Life. Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Album was received by the Red Hot Chili Peppers for Stadium Arcadium, an album that did have a fair share of good songs on it, and Wolfmother won the Best Hard Rock Performance, which happened to be the highlight of my night. To my pleasant surprise, Slayer was given the Best Metal Performance award. In the R&B category Mary J. Blige won the Best Female Vocal Performance and John Legend won the Best Male Vocal Performance.
So overall, the night of glitz and glamour was a success. With very few boring performances, but many long tedious acceptance speeches, the most important night for music came to an end. Many well-deserved people walked away with awards while others took home some very questionable ones. With two award ceremonies down, there is only one left, the Ocsars, which are set to take place on February 25, after which, we will have an entire year dedicated to following the antics of the ever-so-loved celebrities of Hollywood. |
