Aguilera, the Pussycat Dolls and Danity Kane deliver show-stopping performancesFeb 22, 2007
by Cherie Lim

Nothing can "hold down" Christina Aguilera's 2007 "Back to Basics Tour," which kicked off in Houston, Texas, Tuesday night. Nothing was lacking in the show from lights, to staging, to opening acts; the performance leapt off with only minor glitches. Opening acts for Christina Aguilera were Danity Kane and the Pussycat Dolls, who are both platinum record-selling artists themselves. These distinctive groups of women each flaunted their own unique sense of style and personality while still meshing together to execute a bar-raising show.

The gorgeous girls of Danity Kane electrified the Toyota Center with a surprise entrance. With their flawless looks, sharp moves, and bubbly personalities, their performance almost went of without a hitch except for a few bars where one of the girls forgot to hold up the microphone. The Pussycat Dolls commanded the stage as though they were headlining the tour. With their own built set that looked like cages and popular song selections, they proved to be just as entertaining of an act in person as they are on TV. The Dolls not only performed their top singles, but even paid tribute to their burlesque troupe roots. Parts of their performance may have been inappropriate for some of the younger age groups present, but the Dolls definitely made jaws drop. If you're wondering if any of the girls can actually sing besides Nicole Scherzinger, the lead singer, they proved there is no lack of talent in the group when Scherzinger left the stage for a number. Yet, with an amazing a cappella performance upon her return, Scherzinger cemented her position as lead singer.

A jazz club atmosphere hung over the first half of Aguilera's performance. With flapper-inspired costumes, a live jazz band and tables and chairs as props, Aguilera performed hits such as "Come on Over" and "What a Girl Wants" with a '20s beat. As the second half began, Aguilera ignited the stage with a carnival set equipped with acrobats on high swings, flame twirlers and men on stilts. Yet, applause reached new heights when Aguilera emerged on a carousel horse surrounded by pole dancers to perform her controversial hit "Dirrty." If all this innovative choreography was not enough to keep you entertained, Aguilera's commanding vocals would have done the trick. With songs like "Oh Mother," "Beautiful" and "Fighter," there is no doubt Aguilera could join the ranks of Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. Unlike many of her peers, Aguilera doesn't need panty-free night outs or a shaved head to draw herself an audience. Her powerhouse vocals shoot her to the spot of top diva of her generation. If there is anybody who sounded better in person than after a recording studio, it is Christina Aguilera.
