5 Ways To Work Out Smarter - From Christina's TrainerType: Magazine Article

5 ways to work out smarter—straight from Christina's trainerAug 2008
by Shaun Dreisbach

1.
Lift weights--heavy ones. "Christina does biceps curls with 15-pound dumbbells and chest presses with 20-pounders," says Tee Sorge, who has trained Aguilera for the past three and a half years. "She knows they're not going to bulk her up. What they will do is help build lean muscle that kicks up your metabolism and make your body burn more calories each day--so you'll lose weight faster." If you can do two consecutive sets of 15 reps, the weights you're lifting are too light. (Eight to 12 reps is the ideal.) Grab a heavier pair!

2.
Mix a little cardio into your strength routine. "I throw in a minute or two of jumping rope, stair climbing or boxing after every few toning moves Christina does to keep her heart rate up and really maximize the number of calories she burns," says Sorge.

3.
Focus on your core (as in, your abs). The reward, says Sorge, is more than just a flat belly: "Your core is your body's center, its foundation. If you're strong there, you're going to be strong and healthy, period." She has Aguilera do 300 to 400 reps of various ab exercises per session. Yowza!

4.
Think intervals. Workouts during which you alternate speedy bursts of exercise with more moderate kinds are a great way to up the intensity of your cardio, says Sorge. "Christina slowly jogs for five minutes on flat ground, sprints for three to five minutes, and then does a slow uphill walk for the remainder of the workout. It's amazingly effective at making your body really lean."

5.
Dedicate yourself! "Christina worked out with me until she was eight months pregnant--and then started back up a few months after [her son] Max was born," says Sorge. "That's what helped her look so good during her pregnancy--and snap back so quickly." Your workouts don't have to be long, just consistent. Think one hour at least three to five times a week (and if you're pregnant, talk to your doctor about kind of exercise is right for you).
