Standing in a tower of neon-lit boxes, Christina gave a taste of the future-shock version of her first hit, "Genie in a Bottle," before slinking over to a glowing set to perform her new Goldfrapp-like techno dance tune "Keep Getting' Better."

VMA Performances Get A B- From The LA TimesType: Internet Article
Grading the 2008 MTV VMA performances - Sep 08, 2008
Christina Aguilera

A brief updated take on “Genie in a Bottle” opened Aguilera’s set, which soon gave way to her new single, “Keeps Getting Better.”

The song is clearly inspired by Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl,” but Aguilera sounds just fine with some amped-up guitars behind her and the song’s electronic zips and snappy beat provide the hook.

A shame it was obvious she was lip-syncing, as the segment was more about her performance than her voice.

Grade: B-...

Her rival Christina took to the stage and performed a remix of Genie in a Bottle and her new track Keep Getting Better.

Christina Aguilera's Performance at 2008 VMAs - Sep 08, 2008
Christina Aguilera performed Keeps Getting Better last night at the 2008 MTV VMAs. The song was great but it would have been cooler if she actually sang some parts of the song. We get that it was very electronic, but she has an amazing voice so it wouldn't be that hard for her to pull it off.

Nevertheless, we can't wait for her new album! We're digging the new sounds....

VMAs: You go, girl - Sep 08, 2008
The rest of the show, as they say, was noise.

Aguilera's "Keeps Getting Better" choreography was supposed to make her look like a twisted supergirl dancing with some nerdy Clark Kents, but it looked more like a feminist twist on "Deal or No Deal."

Either way, it was a moment that came and went. However empowered Xtina wants to be, she was upstaged by Sparks, who showed a generation of teenage girls that sisters really can do it for themselves.

Read on for the whole article.
